Will Gold Rate Fall Before Diwali 2026? A Buyer's Guide

Nobody can promise whether the gold price will increase or decrease in future, and 2026 has already proved it. Gold hit a record in late January, then fell hard. On 1 October 2026, 24K gold in India closed at ₹1,48,138 per 10 g, before GST and making charges. Check today's gold rate before you shop, because it moves daily.
For 2026–27, the honest answer is two-sided. Another US rate hike or a stronger rupee could pull the rate down. A weaker rupee, strong Dhanteras buying or fresh West Asia tension could push it up. If you're buying wedding or festive jewellery, you don't need to time the bottom. You need a plan that limits regret either way.
Where Gold Prices Stand in Early October 2026
The 2026 gold price trend is down, yet your rupee rate has fallen far less than the global price. Spot gold closed near $4,140 an ounce on 2 October, according to Kitco. That's roughly 26% below the $5,595 it touched on 29 January.
The Indian figure above comes from IBJA's daily opening and closing rates, India's bullion benchmark. Its 22K (916) rate that day was ₹1,35,694 per 10 g.
Now compare quarterly averages from the World Gold Council's India Q2 2026 report. The MCX spot price, India's exchange gold price, averaged ₹1,51,108 in Q1. Today's rate is only about 2% below that. Over the same stretch, the London benchmark (LBMA) price fell about 15%.
Two Indian factors filled the gap. The rupee slid from about ₹90 per dollar in January to roughly ₹95–96 by late summer, per PTI. Then import duty jumped from 6% to 15% in May.
What the 2025–26 Gold Forecasts Got Wrong
Most 2026 gold price predictions for India got the level, the direction or the drivers wrong. Many of those pages still rank, and their numbers still get quoted at counters.
Several high-ranking Indian forecast pages still show 2026 prices of ₹90,000 to ₹98,000 per 10 g. The real Q2 average was ₹1,50,733, per the World Gold Council. Other pages said gold was unlikely to fall. Weeks later, COMEX gold futures dropped about 30% from the January record to the 30 June low.
The rate story was wrong too. Many 2026 outlooks assumed US rate cuts would lift gold. Instead, the US Federal Reserve raised rates on 16 September. Bank targets of $6,000 or more for end-2026 were common in early 2026. Gold now trades near $4,140.
Why Gold Fell After January 2026
Gold fell after January mainly because it had risen too far, too fast. It gained more than 20% in January alone, so buyers took profits and the selling fed on itself.
A stronger dollar and rising US bond yields then added pressure. Analysts still don't agree on one trigger. Honestly, that's the real lesson: a single price target tells you nothing about risk.
5 Things That Will Decide Gold's Next Move in India
Five forces set the rate you see at the counter, and two of them are purely Indian.
US Interest Rates After the September Fed Hike
Higher US interest rates usually pull gold prices down. On 16 September, the Federal Reserve raised its policy rate by 0.25 percentage points to 3.75–4%. The Fed is America's central bank. Its statement said inflation was still above target, which leaves room for more hikes.
Gold pays no interest. So when US bonds pay more, holding gold costs more in lost income. Higher rates also tend to lift the dollar, and gold is priced in dollars. After the hike, gold slipped from about $4,275 in mid-September, as CBS News reported, to about $4,140.
Wondering whether the gold rate will decrease in coming days? Watch the Fed. Its next meetings fall on 27–28 October and 8–9 December. The October one lands nine days before Dhanteras on 6 November. Another hike is the biggest known reason gold could dip before Diwali.
The Rupee Against the US Dollar
A weaker rupee makes gold costlier in India, even when the global price stays flat. Imports made up 82% of India's gold supply in Q2 2026, per the WGC, and they're paid in dollars.
At today's prices, every ₹1 the rupee loses adds roughly ₹1,500 to 10 g of 24K gold. The World Gold Council noted the rupee had already fallen over 7% by May. High crude prices from the West Asia conflict add pressure, since India buys oil in dollars too.
The 15% Import Duty and the Local Discount
The duty hike raised Indian prices, but not by the full nine points yet. In May 2026, India raised gold import duty from 6% to 15%. The World Gold Council called it the steepest increase on record. The total combines basic customs duty and AIDC, a farm infrastructure cess.
MCX spot prices rose only 4–6% after the change, per the same WGC note. Indian gold then traded at a deep discount to the landed price, meaning the global price plus import taxes. By mid-May that gap was nearly $150 an ounce.
Weak demand and plenty of exchanged old gold kept local prices low. So strong festive buying could shrink that discount and lift your rate, even with global gold flat. A duty cut, like July 2024's cut to 6%, would work the other way.
Central Bank Gold Buying
Central banks are still buying gold, which supports prices, but their buying has turned uneven. The World Gold Council reports 289 tonnes of central bank buying in Q2 2026, a record for a second quarter. Still, first-half buying of 345 tonnes was the lowest since 2022.
RBI gold reserves have stayed near 880 tonnes since mid-2025, per the WGC. Central banks buy for decades, not weeks. Their purchases are a poor signal for timing a necklace.
Festive and Wedding Season Demand
Festive and wedding demand lifts Indian buying, but it rarely sets the global price. Indian jewellery demand was 145 tonnes in Q4 2025, against 89 tonnes in Q2 2025, per WGC data.
Busy counters can firm local premiums. Even so, your rate mostly follows the dollar price and the rupee. The WGC expects demand to stay price sensitive, with dips pulling buyers in.
Planning a wedding? The bridal jewellery guide helps separate must-haves from extras. Check 22KT mangalsutra prices early, and consider a slimmer mangalsutra locket. Lighter main sets help too, such as lightweight bridal necklaces or Bengali pearl gold necklaces. A 5 gram maang tikka and new noya designs complete a Bengali set without much extra weight.
Will Gold Price Increase or Decrease? 2026–27 Scenarios
Whether the gold price will increase or decrease in future depends on which scenarios play out. Your future gold rate in India often reflects several at once.
If this happens | Likely effect on your ₹ rate | Why |
|---|---|---|
The Fed hikes again in October or December | Down | Higher US rates make gold less attractive and lift the dollar |
The Fed pauses and signals 2027 cuts | Up | Lower rates cut the cost of holding gold |
The rupee weakens further | Up, even if global gold is flat | About ₹1,500 more per 10 g of 24K per ₹1 fall |
The rupee strengthens | Down | Imported gold gets cheaper in rupees |
Strong Dhanteras and wedding buying | Up a little locally | The post-duty discount can narrow |
Weak festive demand or a poor monsoon | Down a little locally | Discounts widen as sellers chase sales |
West Asia conflict and oil prices escalate | Up, possibly sharply | Safe-haven buying rises and the rupee weakens |
India cuts the 15% import duty | Down quickly | The duty is built into every gram |
Some rows stack. An oil shock lifts global gold and weakens the rupee together. Others cancel out, like a Fed hike arriving during a rupee slide.
What the Big Gold Forecasters Say and Where They Differ
The big forecasters agree gold stays historically expensive, but they split on 2027.
The World Bank's April 2026 Commodity Markets Outlook projects gold averaging $4,700 an ounce in 2026. For 2027, it expects $4,300, a fall of 8.5%. Its precious metals index rises 42% in 2026, then drops 8%.
Read that 2027 figure carefully. The fall is measured from a 2026 average inflated by January's spike. In fact, $4,300 sits slightly above today's price.
J.P. Morgan is harder to pin down. J.P. Morgan's gold price research page still shows about $6,000 by late 2026 and $6,300 toward end-2027. July news reports said the bank cut its fourth-quarter target to $4,500.
The World Gold Council doesn't publish a price target. In May, it estimated Indian jewellery and coin demand could fall 50–60 tonnes this year.

Should You Buy Gold Now or Wait? A Buyer's Checklist
If you need jewellery for a fixed date, buy for the date. If you're saving, buy in parts.
Buying Gold Jewellery to Wear
Judge jewellery by how you'll use it, not by next year's resale value.
A fixed date beats a guessed dip. Delaying a wedding or Dhanteras purchase can cost more than a dip saves.
Gifts work the same way. Fit the weight to the budget for a husband's birthday, a sister's birthday or a couple's wedding.
Compare the final bill, not the per-gram rate. That's rate times weight, plus making charges, plus 3% GST.
Check the BIS hallmark and six-digit HUID, a unique code per piece. See how to check gold purity and hallmark gold vs BIS gold.
Get the size right first. Measure bangle size at home, because exchanges usually lose the making charges.
Ignore "buy today, prices will go up". No seller knows that.
Here's how a bill builds up. Take 10 g of 22K at IBJA's ₹1,35,694. If making charges were 12%, that adds ₹16,283. Then 3% GST on the total adds about ₹4,559. The bill lands near ₹1,56,537, roughly 15% above the bare gold value.

Buying Gold Coins to Save
Coins suit saving better than jewellery, but they carry the same price risk. Anyone who bought at the January peak is still sitting on a loss.
Coins need little design work, so making charges are usually lower. The Lakshmi gold coin and Gini gold coin are two traditional options. One small coin every month or two spreads your entry price.
How to Reduce Gold Timing Risk Without Waiting
You can lower timing risk without a forecast. Here's how.
Split One Purchase Into Two or Three
Splitting a purchase halves your regret in both directions. Say you need 20 g, and you buy 10 g now and 10 g after Diwali. If gold falls 6% in between, your average cost is 3% below buying today. If it rises 6%, you pay 3% more. You give up the best case to avoid the worst.
Choose Lighter Weights and Lower Carats
Buying lighter cuts your exposure most directly. The WGC says Indian buyers have been shifting to lighter, lower-carat pieces. At IBJA's 22K rate of ₹13,569 a gram, choosing 8 g over 10 g saves ₹27,138. That's before making and GST.
Under 5 g suits daily wear and gifts: 2 gram earrings, 1 gram rings and 5 gram necklaces. Try 5 gram pendants, light pendants or new locket designs. A gold bali, nose pin or thumb ring also stays light.
From 5–10 g, see the lightweight necklace guide, small daily-wear necklaces and 8 gram necklaces. Compare a chain under 10 grams with other daily-wear chain designs.
From 10–15 g, you're into daily-wear bangles and heavier rings for women. Browse necklaces, chains, tops, ladies' rings and mangalsutras by weight.
Lower carat is the other lever. A 14K gold necklace holds about 58% gold, against 91.6% in 22K. It costs far less, but resale value per gram is lower, and most families still choose 22K for bridal gold.
Use Old Gold Exchange as a Built-In Hedge
Exchanging old gold protects most of a purchase from timing, because both sides move with the same rate. If gold rises, your old piece is worth more, and so is the new one. Only the cash top-up is exposed.
The WGC's Q2 report says exchanges made up as much as 70% of sales at some retailers. At Biswakarma, we deduct stone weight, making charges and GST when valuing an exchanged piece. The FAQ page explains the process, and the gold guides cover more buying basics.
