Hallmark Gold vs BIS Gold: The Real Difference

Walk into a showroom and you will hear both terms inside a minute. Hallmark gold. BIS gold. Two names, one thing. In India today, hallmark gold is BIS hallmarked gold, and no second system exists.

That mix-up costs buyers money. Some pay a premium for "BIS gold" over plain "hallmarked gold". Others skip checking altogether, because a stamp feels like proof enough. So here is what the marks promise, what they quietly leave out, and how to check a piece yourself.

Hallmark gold and BIS gold are the same thing

One organisation hallmarks precious metals in India. That is the Bureau of Indian Standards, the country's national standards body, shortened to BIS. So "BIS gold", "BIS hallmark gold" and "hallmark gold" all point at a single certification. Some shoppers say "BIS certified gold" too. Still the same scheme.

In India, hallmark gold and BIS gold mean the same thing. The Bureau of Indian Standards runs the country's only hallmarking scheme, so every legally hallmarked gold article is BIS hallmarked. Genuine pieces carry three marks: the BIS logo, the purity grade such as 22K916, and a six-character HUID code.

BIS describes hallmarking as testing precious metal and officially recording how much of it an article holds. Put plainly, a recognised lab checks the metal and marks what it found.

No rival hallmark exists to compare against. Say a counter offers "hallmark gold" at one rate and "BIS gold" at another. That is a sales line, not a grade.

Hallmark, BIS gold, 916 and HUID compared

People use four terms as if they were four products. They are not, and this table sorts them out.

Notice the split. Two rows describe a certificate, one describes purity, one describes an identity code. A ring can be 916 without carrying a hallmark, and that gap is where buyers get hurt.

What a hallmark certifies, and what it leaves out

A hallmark answers one question: how much gold is in the metal. It says nothing about anything else on your bill.

Purity is never 100%. A 22K916 mark means 91.6% gold, with the rest made up of other metals for strength. Pure gold bends too easily for a bangle you plan to wear daily.

Here is what the mark does not cover:

• Weight. The hallmark carries no weight information at all.

• Stones. Gross weight includes stones and beads, so ask for the net gold weight.

• Making charges and wastage. Your jeweller sets these, not BIS.

• Resale rate. That follows the market on the day you sell.

BIS puts the rest of the protection in the invoice. Your bill must describe each article and state the net weight of precious metal. It must also give purity in carat and fineness, plus hallmarking charges.

The three marks on hallmarked gold today

Before 1 July 2021, hallmarked jewellery carried four marks. The BIS logo, purity, the assaying centre's mark and the jeweller's mark all appeared together. Since then, the HUID code has replaced the last two.

Current pieces carry exactly three marks.

The BIS logo, a triangle rather than a brand

The triangle is the certification mark, not a maker's stamp. It confirms the article passed testing at a recognised assaying and hallmarking centre. Any registered shop can send work there, so the triangle vouches for the test alone.

The purity mark, read as carat plus fineness

Fineness is purity in parts per thousand. The mark pairs both readings, so 22K916 means 22 carat at 91.6% gold.

Mandatory hallmarking also covers 20K and 23K gold, which turn up far less often at retail.

The HUID, six characters unique to your piece

HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification. It is a six-character alphanumeric code, laser-marked on the article after testing. Every ring, bangle and chain gets its own, and no two match.

Why HUID exists and what it proves

Picture the old system. Four identical marks went onto every piece in a batch, punched by hand. Copying them took a workshop rather than a laboratory, so fake stamps circulated.

HUID changed the economics of that fraud. BIS generates the code on its server once testing ends, and the centre then laser-marks it. The number ties to a database record: the purity, the centre that tested it, and the jeweller's registration number.

As a result, a forged code fails in one of two ways. It returns nothing, or it returns some other article's details. Either way, thirty seconds on your phone exposes it. Authenticity stops being a matter of trust and becomes a lookup.

The scale is worth knowing. BIS reported more than 60 crore gold items hallmarked with a HUID between 1 July 2021 and 5 March 2026.

How to check hallmark gold before you pay

Do this at the counter, while the piece is still theirs.

1. Ask for the magnifier. Jewellers must keep a lens of at least 10x magnification to show you the marks. They sit around a millimetre wide.

2. Find all three. Triangle, purity grade, HUID. Two out of three is not a hallmark.

3. Match the purity to the price. If you are paying the 22K rate, the mark should read 22K916.

4. Verify the HUID. Open the BIS Care app, tap Verify HUID, and enter the code. It returns the purity and the jeweller's registration details.

5. Read the bill before signing. Net weight, carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges all belong on it.

6. Check every piece separately. Each article in a pair needs its own hallmark, and so does each detachable part.

If the HUID does not verify, do this next

Hallmark gold that fails the app check is not a paperwork glitch. Treat a blank result as a reason to stop.

First, ask the counter to re-enter the code while you watch. Transcription slips happen, and 0 against O trips people up constantly. If it still fails, do not complete the purchase.

Already paid? You can have the article tested at any BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centre. BIS lists gold hallmarking at ₹45 per article with a ₹200 minimum per consignment, taxes extra, and rates can change.

Then escalate. Complaints reach BIS through the BIS Care app, the online complaint portal, or complaints@bis.gov.in. You can also raise the matter through the National Consumer Helpline portal.

If purity does turn out short, the rule is specific. Rule 49 of the BIS Rules, 2018 fixes the compensation. BIS's consumer FAQ on mandatory hallmarking spells out the amount. You get twice the value of the purity shortfall for the weight sold, plus testing charges.

Where hallmarking is mandatory, and who is exempt

Gold hallmarking in India became mandatory on 23 June 2021, across 256 districts. It has widened in phases since, reaching 380 districts from 2 March 2026. BIS has notified more districts after that, so confirm your own district on the current list.

Six caratages fall under the mandatory scheme: 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K. BIS confirmed that list when announcing the sixth phase. Hallmarking for 9K gold exists as a voluntary grade under the Indian Standard.

The exemptions surprise people. At the launch of mandatory hallmarking, the government listed the exemptions, including jewellers with annual turnover up to ₹40 lakh. Kundan, Polki and Jadau work was exempted too, along with export consignments, watches and fountain pens.

Old gold jewellery: what you can and cannot do

Your grandmother's bangles are not illegal, and nobody can force you to surrender them. BIS confirms that consumers may sell old jewellery to jewellers, hallmarked or not.

Getting that old piece hallmarked is a different matter. Only BIS-registered jewellers may submit articles to an assaying centre, so you cannot walk in with a family chain yourself. The BIS consumer FAQ answers the question directly, and the answer is no.

What you can do is get it tested. Any recognised centre will assay your jewellery and issue a gold purity report. That report is worth having before you negotiate an exchange, because it removes guesswork from the counter's offer.

Once a jeweller buys old gold, it usually goes back for melting. The new article made from that metal then gets hallmarked in the normal way.

Five myths about hallmarked gold, corrected

"Hallmarked means pure gold." It means certified purity at a stated grade. 22K916 is 91.6% gold, and that is the honest number.

"The stamp settles it." Physical marks can be copied. The database check is the part nobody can fake easily, so use it.

"Old four-mark jewellery must be fake." Pieces hallmarked before July 2021 legitimately carry the older four marks. Age alone is not evidence of fraud.

"The hallmark decides the price." Rate, net weight, making charges and GST decide the price. Certification is not a pricing input.

"Hallmarking has ended gold fraud." It has not. BIS reported more than 30 enforcement actions against jewellers in FY 2025-26, so the checks above still earn their place.

Before you pay, run these four checks

Three marks on the piece. Then the app check. Your bill should name net weight, carat and fineness. Finally, look at every piece in the set separately.

That sequence takes about ninety seconds. It also settles the question those two terms confused in the first place. Hallmark gold and BIS gold are one certification. The HUID proves that certification belongs to the piece in your hand.
