22Kt Gold Mangalsutra Designs & Prices: Easy 2026 Guide

A 22kt gold mangalsutra is priced from three numbers. Multiply the 22K gold rate per gram by the net gold weight. Add the shop's making charge. Then add 3% GST on that total. At our Kolkata rate of ₹14,820 a gram on 20 September 2026, 5 g of gold alone costs ₹74,100.
That's the whole method. Everything below helps you check each number yourself, on paper and on your phone.
We've run our shop at Barasat Colony More since 2000. Families usually come to us with a wedding date fixed and a budget in mind. This guide lays out the same sums we'd show you at the counter.
22K Mangalsutra Price by Weight, Dated Kolkata Rate
Every row below uses one rate: ₹14,820 a gram for 22 KT (916). That figure comes from our Kolkata gold rate board, as on 20 September 2026 at 11:06 am. Rates move daily, and your bill uses the rate at the time you book or buy.
Net gold weight | Gold value at ₹14,820/g | Gold + 3% GST (before making) |
|---|---|---|
2 g | ₹29,640 | ₹30,529.20 |
5 g | ₹74,100 | ₹76,323 |
8 g | ₹1,18,560 | ₹1,22,116.80 |
10 g | ₹1,48,200 | ₹1,52,646 |
15 g | ₹2,22,300 | ₹2,28,969 |
22 g | ₹3,26,040 | ₹3,35,821.20 |
Rates as on 20 September 2026, 11:06 am, Biswakarma Jewellery Shilpalaya, Kolkata.
Treat the last column as a floor. Making charges come on top, and GST applies to them too.
This explains why some "starts from" prices online don't add up. At this rate, a 5 g design can't cost less than ₹74,100 in gold alone. If a site shows less, its price is older than its rate. Ask for the date behind any price you see.
No weight is standard for a gold mangalsutra. Listings in 2026 run from about 2 g for a small pendant piece to past 20 g for long bridal chains. So the answer to "how much does a 22k gold mangalsutra cost in India" is really your chosen weight times the day's rate.
Rates also differ by city and by shop. Don't mix one shop's rate with another shop's design weight. For your own weight, our online gold price calculator does the sum.
How a 22kt Gold Mangalsutra Bill Is Built
Here's a sample bill for 10 g of net gold at ₹14,820 a gram. The making charge is a placeholder of 10%, used only to show the maths.
Line | Amount |
|---|---|
Gold value (10 g × ₹14,820) | ₹1,48,200 |
Making charge (placeholder 10%) | ₹14,820 |
Taxable value | ₹1,63,020 |
GST at 3% of ₹1,63,020 | ₹4,890.60 |
Total | ₹1,67,910.60 |
Making charges pay for design and labour. Shops quote them as a percentage of gold value or as a flat rate per gram. Fine vati or patta work generally takes more labour than a plain chain. Get the making charge written in rupees on your estimate before you agree.
GST Is 3% on the Whole Bill, Making Included
Many online calculators add 3% on the gold and 5% on the making. That isn't the rule for a shop sale. Question 7 of the GST Council's sectoral FAQ on gems and jewellery answers it directly. GST is 3% of the total transaction value, whether making is shown separately or not.
The 5% rate does exist, but somewhere else. According to Question 8 of the same FAQ, a registered job worker charges 5% on job charges only. That's a bill between a karigar (craftsman) and the jeweller, not your bill.
On the sample above, the calculator method gives ₹5,187 in GST. The official method gives ₹4,890.60. The gap is ₹296.40, which is small. Still, a bill showing 5% on making tells you it wasn't prepared carefully.
And no, GST isn't charged twice. You pay it once, at 3%, on one total.
Net Weight vs Gross Weight When Beads Are Strung
Gross weight is everything on the scale. Net weight is the gold alone. Black glass beads, thread and any stones raise the gross weight, but none of them is gold.
Ask for both weights on your bill. The gold rate should apply to net weight. If a shop quotes one figure only, ask which one it is.
What the 916 Hallmark and HUID Tell You
Since 1 July 2021, a gold hallmark has three marks, according to the Bureau of Indian Standards hallmarking FAQ. You'll see the BIS logo, the purity as 22K916, and a HUID. HUID means a unique six-character hallmark code.
916 fineness means 916 parts gold per 1,000, or 91.6%. The standard behind it is IS 1417:2016. It allows 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K hallmarks.
Check the HUID on the Chain and the Pendant
Install the BIS Care app and open "Verify HUID". Type in the six characters from the piece. Then match what the app shows against your bill.
Most buying guides skip the next step. BIS says each detachable part must carry its own hallmark with a different HUID. A mangalsutra pendant often comes off its chain. In that case, look for two HUIDs: one on the pendant, one on the chain.
BIS also says your invoice should carry the hallmark details. Keep the bill safe for any later complaint.
Want a second opinion? Any BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centre will fire-assay a hallmarked piece for ₹200. Our guide on checking gold purity before you buy covers the in-shop checks too.

Is Hallmarking Compulsory Where You Buy?
Mandatory hallmarking runs district by district, not across all of India at once. BIS's list reached 392 districts with the phase dated 3 August 2026. Kolkata and North 24 Parganas, where our Barasat shop sits, joined in the first phase on 23 June 2021.
In covered districts, hallmarked gold jewellery can't be sold without a six-digit HUID after 31 March 2023. Found older marks on a family piece? Our explainer on hallmark gold vs BIS gold helps you read them.
Mangalsutra Styles Sorted by How Often You'll Wear Them
Weight drives price, so start with how often you'll wear it. Our post on modern mangalsutra designs shows the looks in pictures. Here's how each style tends to land on the bill.
Lightweight and short, for office wear. A single line of black beads with a small pendant sits close to the neck. If your limit is 10 grams, look here first. At our dated rate, 8 g of gold is ₹1,18,560 before making and GST. Prefer gold without beads? See our gold chains under 10 grams.
Long mangalsutras. These often use two lines of beads and sit lower on the chest. More chain means more gold. At 15 g, the gold alone is ₹2,22,300.
Vati pendant designs. A vati is a small cup-shaped pendant, usually worn in pairs. A 22k gold mangalsutra with a vati pendant can stay light if the cups are small. Hollow cups keep the weight down, but they dent more easily than solid ones.
Patta, ganthan and tanmaniya styles. A patta is a flat bar pendant. Ganthan and tanmaniya are Maharashtrian styles, and their beadwork varies a lot. Ask for the net gold weight of each design you shortlist.
Bridal mangalsutras. Brides often choose longer, heavier pieces for the wedding day itself. Many then switch to a lighter one for daily wear. For the rest of the set, see our bridal jewellery guide.
22 Carat or 18K for a Mangalsutra You Wear Daily
22 carat gold is 91.6% gold, while 18K is 75%. The extra alloy makes 18K harder. So 22K is the softer choice, and it will scratch and can bend with daily wear.
That doesn't rule out a 22K piece for every day. It means choosing the build with care. Pick sturdier links, a solid pendant and a well-fitted hook, and check the hook before you pay.
Price matters here as well. On 20 September 2026 our board showed ₹12,005 a gram for 18 KT against ₹14,820 for 22 KT. For 8 g, that's ₹96,040 in 18K gold versus ₹1,18,560 in 22K.
Here's our honest take. If you want a very fine chain you'll never remove, 18K may serve you better. If you want more gold for your money and a traditional colour, choose 22K and a sturdier design.
Why Gold Jewellery Got Costlier After May 2026
On 13 May 2026, India raised the import duty on gold from 6% to 15%. The World Gold Council's May 2026 India market update calls it the steepest increase on record. The Council expects jewellery plus bar and coin demand to fall by 50 to 60 tonnes in 2026, about 10%.
For you, the practical point is simple. A price guide that still cites a 6% duty was written before mid-May 2026. Treat its numbers as stale. That's why our table carries a date and a time, and why we don't forecast rates.
Is a Mangalsutra Needed? A Note for Bengali Families
Traditional Bengali Hindu weddings don't include tying a mangalsutra. The customary markers are shankha (white conch bangle), pola (red coral bangle), loha (iron bangle) and sindoor. Our post on pola bangles and their meaning explains that tradition in full.
Even so, many families now choose a mangalsutra anyway. Some weddings bring together two families' customs. Other brides simply like one as everyday jewellery.
It's a choice, not a rule. If you're weighing one against your budget, the price table above applies just the same.
Exchanging an Old Mangalsutra for a New One
Yes, you can generally exchange an old gold mangalsutra for a new one. The shop tests the purity and weighs the gold. It then values that gold at the day's rate.
Beads and stones aren't counted as gold. Also, the making charges and GST you paid the first time aren't recovered. For this reason, a gold mangalsutra isn't a savings product, even though the gold keeps its value.
Before you exchange, bring the old bill if you still have it. Ask for the tested purity and net weight in writing before you agree to a figure.
