Pendant Only or Pendant With Chain: Which Is Better?

Buy a pendant with chain if you don't own a silver chain yet. Buy the pendant only if you already have a chain that fits.

A set saves you matching work. The chain and the bail already fit each other.

Pendant-only pieces cost less up front. On our list, they start at ₹628 against ₹2,597 for the cheapest set. They also let you swap charms on one chain.

Check one thing first: the chain's clasp must pass through the bail. You can browse our silver chains and ask us to test the fit.

Avoid hanging a silver pendant on a very thin chain if it weighs over 2 g. A heavier pendant pulls hard at one point and can wear the links.

What Chain Length Is Best for a Pendant?

An 18-inch chain is the safest choice for most adult women. It falls just below the collarbone and suits most necklines.

These positions shift with your build. On a fuller neck, every length sits higher. On a slim teenager, a 16-inch chain hangs lower.

The easiest check is at home. Lay a necklace you already own on a tape measure, then note where it sits when worn.

Why Price Follows Weight on Small Silver Pieces

The price of a silver pendant follows its net weight more than its design. Net weight is the figure we price on, shown on every product page.

Here's a worked example. Our 925 silver rate was ₹223 per gram on 5 October 2026, on our gold and silver rate board. The Mini Bloom Charm weighs 1.09 g, so its silver is worth about ₹243. It sells for ₹1,037.

The gap covers the craft: shaping, setting stones, polishing and 3% GST. So on small pieces, the silver itself is only about a quarter of the price.

Across our in-stock pieces, the all-in price stays close to ₹940 to ₹1,015 per gram. You can use that as a quick check. A 2 g pendant should cost about ₹2,000 here, and a 5 g set about ₹4,700.

If a listing hides the net weight, you can't compare it fairly.

How to Check if a Silver Pendant Is Real 925

A "925" stamp shows what the maker claims, not what an independent lab has tested. Only a BIS hallmark with a HUID proves purity.

What a BIS Silver Hallmark Looks Like

A BIS silver hallmark has four marks, as the government portal Vikaspedia explains on its silver hallmarking page. They are the BIS logo, the word SILVER, the purity grade and a six-digit HUID code. You can check that code on the free BIS CARE app.

Silver hallmarking is still voluntary in India. In June 2026, PTI reported that the BIS chief was still studying how to make silver hallmarking mandatory. No date has been set.

Our own silver pendants don't carry a BIS hallmark or HUID at present. Each product page lists 92.5% purity and the net weight instead.

Real 925 vs Gold-Plated vs German Silver

Three things often get sold side by side:

• 925 sterling silver is 92.5% silver, mixed with copper for strength. Most sterling silver pendant necklace listings use this grade. It tarnishes slowly and can be cleaned back to bright.

• Gold-plated silver is a 925 pendant with a thin gold coat on top. It looks like gold, but the coat wears off with daily rubbing. Once it wears, the silver shows through in patches.

• German silver, also called nickel silver, is copper, nickel and zinc. It contains no silver at all, and the nickel can trouble sensitive skin.

A magnet won't settle it. Silver and German silver both ignore magnets. Your best checks are a HUID, a bill that states purity and net weight, or a jeweller's purity test.

Is a Silver Pendant Safe for a Young Girl?

Necklaces are not safe for babies and toddlers. The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that necklaces carry a two-fold risk of strangulation and choking for young children. The risk is highest when no adult is watching, such as during sleep.

Small charms are also choking hazards if a chain breaks.

For school-age girls, wait until she can manage a chain herself. Even then, take it off before bed, sports and swimming.

Does a 925 Silver Pendant Turn Black or Irritate Skin?

Yes, a 925 silver pendant turns dark over time. The silver and copper react with sulphur in air, sweat and some cosmetics. This is tarnish, and it wipes off.

No real silver pendant stays bright without care. Rhodium plating, a thin bright metal coat, slows tarnish on some brands' pieces. Gold plating does the same. Both coats wear away with rubbing, though, so the tarnish returns.

Skin reactions are rarer, but they happen. DermNet's guide to jewellery allergy notes that sterling silver can hold traces of nickel. It also names nickel as the most common jewellery allergy.

If you've reacted to cheap earrings before, try a new pendant for a few hours first. Watch for redness or itching where it touches your skin. If a rash appears, stop wearing it and see a dermatologist.

For light tarnish, wash it in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap. Rinse well and dry it fully before you put it away. Skip toothpaste and baking soda on stone-set pieces, since grit can scratch silver and loosen stones.

Put on perfume and lotion before your pendant, not after. Store it alone in a small zip bag, so it doesn't scratch or tangle.
