A 5-gram 925 silver rakhi holds about ₹1,156 of metal at ₹250 per gram. Making charges and 3% GST go on top of that. So a "pure silver rakhi" listed at ₹499 is not 5 grams of sterling. Ask for the weight in grams and the purity in writing before you pay.

What a silver rakhi costs today, gram by gram

Weight drives the price. Purity and making charges do the rest.

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure, stamped 925. The remaining 7.5% is usually copper, added for strength. So a 5-gram sterling piece contains 4.625 grams of actual silver.

Silver in India traded around ₹250 per gram in early September 2026, roughly ₹2,50,000 per kilogram. That rate follows MCX futures, which track the international spot price. Check the day's rate before you use the table.

The metal floor for a 925 silver rakhi

This table gives the absolute minimum. It is metal content plus 3% GST, with zero making charge included.

Nobody sells at the floor, because someone still has to cast, polish and finish the piece.

Making charges, GST and the number you actually pay

Making charges cover casting, finishing, plating and the clasp. On small silver pieces they are usually a flat amount rather than a percentage.

Here is where the money leaks. A 3-gram rakhi with ₹900 of making charge is a ₹900 purchase with some silver attached.

Tax works in two ways. Buy a finished piece and 3% GST applies to the whole bill. If the invoice itemises making charges separately, those carry 5% instead. Ask which one you are being charged.

Two honest routes if the total feels high. Go lighter in grams rather than lower in purity. Or buy something he will wear for eleven months, so the making charge buys wear rather than one afternoon.

Your hesitation is the whole market's hesitation, by the way. The Silver Institute's World Silver Survey 2026 recorded global silver jewellery fabrication down 8% in 2025. India fell hardest, at 20%, as record rupee prices hurt affordability.

Most guides sort by motif. That tells you nothing about what happens the week after.

So here are three buckets instead: stays on the wrist, converts to something else, or goes in a box. The third one is a real choice, not a failure.

Stays on the wrist all year

1. Flat oxidised band on an adjustable cord. Oxidised means deliberately darkened in the recesses. It hides fingerprints and daily scuffs far better than a mirror polish. This is the safest bet for a brother who works with his hands.

3. Silver bead or charm on a braided cord. The lightest option that still survives daily wear. Metal weight sits around 2 to 3 grams, so the price stays sane. The cord frays within a year, but any jeweller will restring it.

Converts to a pendant or charm

4. Om or Swastik disc with a bail. A bail is the small loop a chain passes through. Untie the cord after the ceremony, thread a chain, done.

5. Evil eye or infinity charm on a lobster clasp. It unclips cleanly and moves to a keyring or a chain. Look for a soldered jump ring, not a split one that opens.

Keepsake pieces that go in a box

7. Cast Ganesha or Krishna motif. Detailed, three-dimensional and genuinely lovely. Also snaggy on sleeves, which is why it comes off by evening. Buy it knowing that.

8. Filigree or enamel work rakhi. Filigree is fine twisted wire, soldered into patterns. Beautiful, fragile, and not built for a commute.

9. Personalised name or initial plate. Nobody re-gifts these and nobody throws them away. Confirm the spelling twice, since engraved pieces are rarely returnable.

Bucket three is a fine choice, honestly. Just don't pay wrist-wear prices for drawer-wear construction.

Silver rakhi for kids: weight, edges and safety checks

Children need less metal, not more. Two to three grams is plenty for anyone under ten.

Run three checks before buying a lightweight silver rakhi for a child. First, skip pieces with small glued stones, because they come loose and children mouth things. Then run the piece across your palm, feeling for sharp prongs and raw solder joints.

Choose an adjustable cord over a rigid clasp. Wrists grow, and a tight clasp gets yanked.

On skin, sterling silver is generally better tolerated than cheap base-metal alloys. That is not the same as hypoallergenic, and it is not a medical claim. Ask for a nickel-free declaration if the child has reacted to costume jewellery before.

Lumba rakhi and bhaiya-bhabhi sets explained

A lumba is a rakhi tied to a sister-in-law's bangle rather than her wrist. It hangs, so it is built lighter, usually 1.5 to 3 grams.

The custom came from Rajasthani and Marwari families and has spread widely since. Whether your family observes it is a family question, not an obligation.

Sets pair one wrist rakhi with one lumba. Always check the set's combined weight rather than the headline price. A ₹2,400 set weighing 4 grams in total is two thin pieces, not two good ones.

Buying separately often works better. Then you can put the weight where it matters and keep the lumba delicate.

How to tell real silver from silver plating

Plated brass is the main risk in this category, and the giveaway is usually price against weight.

Start with the stamp. Under IS 2112:2025, a hallmarked silver piece carries three components. Those are the BIS Standard Mark with the word SILVER, the purity grade, and a six-digit HUID code. The revised standard recognises seven grades, being 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990 and 999.

Now the part most pages get wrong. Silver hallmarking is voluntary in India. It has been voluntary since 2005. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs then introduced HUID for silver from 1 September 2025, still on a voluntary basis. HUID became compulsory only for silver a jeweller chooses to hallmark.

No mandate date has been fixed. In June 2026, BIS Director General Sanjay Garg told Business Standard the bureau is still studying implementation. He called silver more complex than gold, because the market is far more varied.

So an unhallmarked silver rakhi is legal. It just carries less proof.

Five checks, in the order they cost you least:

1. Divide price by weight. Below the metal floor in the table above, it isn't sterling.

2. Verify the HUID. Open the BIS Care app, use Verify HUID, and check the purity and jeweller against what you were told.

3. Try a magnet. Silver isn't magnetic. A firm pull means a base-metal core.

4. Read the wording. "Silver plated", "EPNS", "German silver" and "silver finish" all mean no sterling.

5. Get a proper bill. It should state gross weight, purity and making charges separately.

Why a silver rakhi turns black, and what fixes it

Silver reacts with sulphur in air, sweat and cosmetics. The result is silver sulphide, a dark film on the surface. It is tarnish, not rust, and it does not eat into the metal.

Deodorant, hair oil, chlorine and a humid Kolkata August all speed it up. So does storing the piece loose beside other metal.

What actually works: warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, a soft toothbrush, then dry it completely. A dry silver polishing cloth handles light film in under a minute. Store it in a small zip pouch, with the air pressed out.

What to avoid. Toothpaste is abrasive and leaves fine scratches on polished silver. Baking soda and foil dips strip oxidised finishes, taking the deliberate darkening with them. Ultrasonic cleaners can loosen glued stones.

Rhodium plating, a thin bright white coating, slows tarnish considerably. It also wears off at contact points over time. No finish stays perfect, and any seller promising lifetime shine is overselling.

Silver rakhi vs gold rakhi at current metal rates

Gold rakhis exist, usually as tiny pendants of half a gram to one gram. Even so, at current gold rates that half-gram costs several times a solid 5-gram silver piece.

The trade is real. Gold gives you a fraction of a gram of a denser metal. Silver gives you a piece with actual presence on the wrist.

For a gift meant to be worn, silver wins on size for the money. For one destined for a locker, gold is the usual choice. Either way, check the day's gold rate first.

What a silver rakhi is worth if you sell it back

Metal value only. That is the whole answer, and sellers rarely say it plainly.

A buyer pays for the pure silver content, so a 5-gram 925 piece is assessed on 4.625 grams. Refining and handling deductions come off that. The design counts for nothing.

Making charges and GST are gone. They are not recoverable at resale, at any shop, at any time.

Exchange within the same shop sometimes beats an outright sale, though terms differ everywhere. So ask about the exchange policy before you buy, not after. And please don't buy a rakhi as a way to hold silver. It's a gift, and it deserves judging as one.

When to order for Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravana Purnima, in August. The rakhi is traditionally tied during the aparahna window, and Bhadra kaal is traditionally avoided.

Order three weeks ahead for delivery within India. For a brother abroad, start five to six weeks out, since customs adds unpredictable days. Engraved pieces need longer still, because most workshops treat them as made-to-order.

Diarise this line and update it each June: Raksha Bandhan 2027 falls on Tuesday, 17 August 2027.

What to pair a silver rakhi with
