New Gold Locket Design Trends 2026

The new gold locket design in 2026 is a lighter one. High gold prices have buyers choosing lockets between half a gram and 3 grams that still look full. Openwork, coloured enamel and tiny diamond accents make that possible. Below, you'll see what each design weighs on our shelf and how its bill adds up.
Why New Locket Designs Look Lighter in 2026
Price is shaping the design. The World Gold Council's Q2 2026 India gold demand report puts domestic gold prices 59% higher than a year earlier. The same report says this is speeding up a move to lighter, lower-carat and studded jewellery.
A WGC–Kantar survey in that report points the same way. It covered 1,963 people in 12 metro and Tier I cities between 22 May and 3 June 2026. They said they were choosing lighter, lower-carat pieces and buying less often.
So a locket now has one job above all. It has to look like more gold than it holds. That's why the latest gold locket designs lean on shape more than mass.
Seven New Gold Locket Designs Worth Comparing
Each weight below is net gold weight from our website listings on 24 September 2026. Read the tag on yours, though. Still deciding what a locket is, or which shape suits your face? Start with our gold locket design guide for women. The full range sits in our gold lockets and pendants section.
The lockets in our range are solid pendants.
1. Sub-Gram Heart, Star and Leaf Lockets
For a light weight gold locket design, start here. Our 22K hearts, stars and leaves weigh about 0.3 to 1 gram. The 14K "fancy" lockets go lower still, from 0.12 to 0.85 gram. They suit daily wear, office wear and a girl's first piece of gold.
The catch: pieces this small often carry a fixed making charge, not a percentage.
2. Om, Swastik, Ganesha and Yantra Lockets
Small sacred symbols mostly weigh 0.6 to 1.8 grams in our range. Our 22K Swastik symbol gold locket is 1.03 grams. Many families wear these as a daily blessing. The evil eye, or nazariya, motif is worn in the same spirit.
3. Surya, Bajrang Bali and Other Deity Lockets
A full figure needs more metal to hold its detail. Expect about 1.6 to 2.8 grams. Our Surya Dev locket weighs 2.67 grams in 22K, and a Bajrang Bali design weighs 1.63 grams. Our Surya locket meaning and designs guide covers that motif in depth.
4. Floral and Butterfly Openwork Lockets
Openwork means cut-out patterns with gaps between the petals. Those gaps make a locket look bigger than its weight. Our 22K butterfly gold locket weighs just 0.87 gram. Floral net, lace and mandala designs run from about 1.4 to 2.9 grams.
Check the thin bridges between the cut-outs. That's where openwork is most likely to bend.
5. Coloured Enamel Lockets
Enamel is coloured glass fused onto metal. Red and green enamel adds colour without adding much weight. As a result, our enamel petal and floral lockets weigh only about 1.2 to 2.5 grams. Enamel can chip if knocked, though, and it's harder to restore than plain polished gold. Keep these for festive and occasional wear.
6. Coin and Medallion Lockets
A coin locket gives you a bold, flat face. But it also needs the most gold for its size. Our coin designs run from 1.8 grams to just over 5 grams. So a smaller coin is simply a lighter coin, and no design trick hides that.
7. Diamond-Accent Lockets in 18K
Small diamond lockets are set in 18K gold, which grips stones better than softer 22K. Ours weigh about 0.6 to 1.6 grams gross, stones included. This is the "studded" shift the World Gold Council describes. The diamonds carry their own price, so the gold formula below covers only part of the bill. Ask for the diamond weight in writing.
What Each Locket Design Weighs and Costs
Every new gold locket design is billed the same way. It's net weight × the day's rate, plus making charges, plus GST. Net weight is the gold alone. Gross weight also counts pearls, beads or stones. The gap can be large: one of our pearl lockets holds 4.7 grams of gold in a 14.7-gram piece.
Design | Net gold weight | Solid or openable | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
Sub-gram heart, star, leaf (22K) | 0.3–1 g | Solid | Daily, office, girls |
14K fancy lockets | 0.12–0.85 g | Solid | Girls, small gifts |
Temple-style leaf lockets (22K) | 0.5–0.6 g | Solid | Saree, daily |
Om, Swastik, Ganesha, yantra | 0.6–1.8 g | Solid | Daily, parents |
Surya, Bajrang Bali, deity figures | 1.6–2.8 g | Solid | Daily prayer, gifts |
Floral and butterfly openwork | 0.9–2.9 g | Solid | Kurti, western wear |
Coloured enamel | 1.2–2.5 g | Solid | Festive wear |
Coin and medallion | 1.8–5.3 g | Solid | A bold everyday look |
Diamond-accent (18K) | 0.6–1.6 g gross | Solid | Anniversary, office |
Mangalsutra pendant (22K) | 2.3–4.7 g | Solid | Married women |
An antique gold locket design doesn't need weight, either. Our temple leaf gold locket weighs 0.51 gram. Antique or temple work is finished by hand. Casting pours gold into a mould, so each piece repeats the design. Handwork usually carries a higher making charge.
The Bill at Today's Kolkata Gold Rate
Our live Kolkata gold rate board was last updated on 23 September 2026 at 10:57 am. It showed 22K at ₹14,560, 18K at ₹11,800 and 14K at ₹10,690 a gram. Rates change daily, so re-check before you buy.
Most 22K lockets on our site list making at 18% of the gold value. Here's how the bill works out for the 1.03-gram Swastik and for any 2-gram 22K locket.
Bill line | 1.03 g Swastik (22K) | 2 g locket (22K) |
|---|---|---|
Gold value (weight × ₹14,560) | ₹14,997 | ₹29,120 |
Making charges at 18% | ₹2,699 | ₹5,242 |
GST at 3% on gold value | ₹450 | ₹874 |
Total before GST on making | ₹18,146 | ₹35,236 |
So a 2-gram 22K gold locket in Kolkata came to about ₹35,236 on 23 September 2026, before GST on making. Ask for GST on making charges as its own line on the bill. You can run your own numbers in our gold calculator for jewellery bills.
Where Making Charges Bite on Light Lockets
Making charges vary by design. A few detailed Ganesha lockets on our site list 30% to 35%. The smallest pieces use a fixed charge, which can match the gold value. That's why a 0.3-gram locket can cost more per gram than a 2-gram one.
But karat saves less than most people expect. On that rate board, 14K costs about 27% less per gram than 22K. 18K costs about 19% less. Halving the weight, on the other hand, halves the gold value. So pick your weight first, then karat, then design. Our lightweight necklace price guide applies the same maths to chains and necklaces.
22K, 18K or 14K Gold for a Locket
The number after the karat shows gold per thousand parts. So 22K916 is 91.6% gold, 18K750 is 75% and 14K585 is 58.5%. The BIS hallmarking FAQ lists six gold grades that can be hallmarked, from 14K to 24K.
On our website, plain lockets come in 22K and the sub-gram fancy lockets in 14K. Diamond lockets are 18K. We don't list plain 18K lockets online right now.
Is an 18K gold locket better than 22K for daily wear? For a plain, solid locket, the difference is small. A locket hangs, so it rarely rubs the way a ring or bangle does. Its weak points are the bail and the jump ring, and you can inspect both.
18K earns its place where stones are set or thin parts flex. A 22K gold locket design gives the deeper yellow that's standard in Bengal. 14K is the cheapest per gram and tougher still, but paler. On tiny pieces, though, a fixed making charge can eat that saving.
Trading Old Gold for a New Locket
Exchange now drives a lot of gold buying. The World Gold Council's Q2 2026 report says it made up as much as 70% of sales at some retailers. Here's what the swap involves:
Your old piece is weighed and tested for purity.
Its value is its pure gold content at the day's rate, less any deduction the jeweller applies.
Stones, beads, lac and solder don't count as gold.
Making charges you paid on the old piece don't come back.
The new locket is billed in full, with gold, making and GST. Then the exchange value is set against that total.
Get both calculations in writing before you agree.
Real Gold Locket or Gold-Plated? How to Tell
Online listings often mix solid gold and gold-plated lockets. Plated means a thin gold layer over brass or another base metal. Four quick checks help:
Divide the price by the stated weight. If the result is below that day's rate for the karat, it isn't solid gold.
A real gold bill states net weight, purity and, for hallmarked pieces, the HUID.
On a worn plated piece, a different colour shows through at the edges and bail.
For certainty, BIS-recognised hallmarking centres will test your jewellery for a fee.
Match Your Locket to the Right Chain
The bail is the loop the chain passes through. Check that your chain slides through it freely. For daily wear, 16 to 18 inches sits around the collarbone. For saree blouses and higher kurti necklines, 18 to 20 inches lets the locket show.
Pick a lobster clasp, the lever-and-hook type, for daily wear. It's harder to open by accident than a spring ring. Also match the chain's thickness to the locket, since a very fine chain under a 3-gram coin can kink. Buying a gold chain with locket as a set? Ask for each weight on the bill separately, then compare our gold chains.
Check a Locket's Hallmark in Three Steps
Find three marks: the BIS logo, the purity (such as 22K916) and a six-character HUID, the piece's unique ID.
Enter that HUID in the "Verify HUID" feature of the free BIS Care app.
Match the purity and jeweller shown in the app against your bill.
One detail matters for light lockets. BIS lists articles weighing less than two grams as exempt from mandatory hallmarking. Many new lockets fall below that line. So ask if yours is hallmarked anyway, and get the purity printed on the bill. Our gold purity check before buying guide covers the rest.
Best Locket for Daily Wear, Saree or a Gift
Daily Wear and Office Lockets
For a daily wear gold locket, choose a solid, plain-polished piece of 0.5 to 2 grams. It won't snag on clothes, and fine scratches polish out.
Locket Designs for Saree, Kurti and Western Wear
Saree: temple-style, deity or coin lockets of 2 to 3 grams, on an 18 to 20 inch chain.
Kurti: floral or butterfly openwork of 1 to 2 grams.
Western or office wear: a sub-gram heart or star, or a diamond accent, on a 16 inch chain.
Locket Gifts for Wife, Mother or Daughter by Budget
These totals use the 23 September 2026 rate and 18% making, before GST on making:
Budget (before GST on making) | What it buys in 22K |
|---|---|
About ₹8,800 | Half a gram (most 14K fancy lockets cost less) |
About ₹17,600 | 1 gram |
About ₹35,200 | 2 grams |
About ₹52,900 | 3 grams |
A sub-gram or 14K piece keeps the risk small if a daughter's chain snaps. For a mother, a Surya, Om or Ganesha locket of 1 to 3 grams suits daily prayer. For a wife, look at diamond-accent lockets or our latest mangalsutra designs.
A Five-Year Test for Any Trendy Locket
No one can promise a design won't date. You can still test it with four questions:
Can you make out the shape from arm's length?
Does the motif mean something to you beyond this season?
Is the finish plain gold that can be re-polished?
Will it sit well on at least two chains you own?
If you answer yes to three, the locket is a safer buy.
You can compare every design above by weight in the Lockets & Pendants section of biswakarmagold.com.
