Key takeaways

Key Takeaways A real silver necklace set is usually 925 sterling silver: 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Oxidised is a blackened finish, not a metal, so check what lies under it. German silver has no silver. Look for the BIS hallmark, verify its six-digit HUID on the BIS Care app, and buy by stated net weight.

A good silver necklace set is hallmarked 925 silver with a HUID code and a stated net weight. 925 means 92.5% silver, with copper making up most of the rest. "Oxidised" only describes a dark finish.

So an oxidised set can be real 925, or German silver with no silver in it at all. This guide is for women buying a set for a wedding, puja, festival or gift. At today's silver rates, paying for metal that isn't there costs real money.

Start with the designs on our silver necklace collection, then run the counter checks below before you pay.

Latest Silver Necklace Set Designs for Women

Today's silver necklace set designs come in five shapes: choker, hasli, long haar, layered and pendant sets. Each sits at a different spot on the neck. That spot matters more than the motif when you match an outfit.

Choker and Hasli Sets

A silver choker set sits close around the base of the neck, while a hasli is a stiff, curved collar. Both pair well with round or boat necklines. Oxidised hasli sets with temple motifs, such as Lakshmi coins or peacocks, are popular for festivals.

For daily wear, though, skip the hasli. The rigid band presses on the collarbone after a few hours.

Long Haar and Layered Necklaces

A long haar falls to the chest or below, so it suits high-neck blouses and kurtas. Layered sets stack two or three strands of different lengths. They look fuller without needing one thick, heavy chain.

You can also build a layered look yourself with a chain from our silver chain range.

Pendant Sets and Gold-Plated Silver

A pendant set is a fine chain with one centre drop, often sold with matching studs. It's the lightest style, and it works for office and gifting. Our guide to 925 silver pendant designs for women covers the drop shapes in detail.

Gold-plated silver is 925 silver with a thin gold layer. You get a gold look while paying mainly for silver. The plating wears first near the clasp, though.

Bright 925 designs with set stones are the other big group. The Lotus Ruby Silver Necklace, for example, has a solid collar bar with ruby-tone beads and a lotus pendant. Its product page lists 92.5% purity and 28.62 g net weight.

Is Oxidised Jewellery Real Silver?

Oxidised jewellery is real silver only when the metal under the dark finish is silver. Oxidising is a chemical treatment that turns the surface into silver sulphide, the same black layer you see as tarnish. Jewellers do it on purpose and then polish the raised parts, so the design stands out.

The trouble is that the same dark look can be put on base metal. Many low-priced oxidised sets in markets are German silver. That name is misleading. German silver, also called nickel silver, is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc with no silver in it.

So don't ask whether a piece is oxidised. Ask what metal it is, and ask to see the hallmark.

Oxidised 925 vs German Silver vs Silver-Plated

Oxidised 925 is the only one of the three that is real silver all the way through. Here's how they compare.

Which is better, oxidised or 925? That's the wrong pairing, because oxidised 925 is both. Choose the finish you like, then insist on 925 underneath. If a seller can't name the metal, treat the piece as costume jewellery and pay costume prices.

How to Check a Silver Necklace Is Real 925

To check a necklace is real 925, find the BIS hallmark and verify its HUID on the BIS Care app. HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification, a code given to one piece. Then make sure the bill states purity and net weight.

Read the Three-Part BIS Hallmark on Silver

A current BIS silver hallmark has three parts. These are the BIS Standard Mark with the word "SILVER", the purity grade and the HUID. This format comes from the revised standard, IS 2112:2025. According to the PIB release on HUID-based silver hallmarking, it applies to pieces hallmarked from 1 September 2025.

The same standard lists seven purity grades: 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990 and 999. For a necklace set, 925 is the grade you'll see most. The marks are tiny, usually near the clasp or on a flat tag, so ask for a loupe.

A plain "925" stamp on its own proves nothing. Anyone can punch those three digits into metal.

How to Verify Silver HUID on the BIS Care App

Verifying a silver HUID takes a minute or two on your phone. Do it in the shop, before you pay.

  1. Install the official BIS Care app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

  2. Open the HUID verification option.

  3. Type in the HUID exactly as it appears on the piece.

  4. Check the result against the necklace and the bill.

The app shows the article type, purity grade, hallmarking date, testing centre and jeweller's registration number. If it says "pendant" and you're holding a necklace, stop there. The same logic applies to gold, which our guide to hallmark gold vs BIS gold explains.

One edge case: a piece hallmarked before 1 September 2025 has the older mark, with no HUID. It may be genuine, but the app can't confirm it.

Is Silver Hallmarking Mandatory in India?

No. Silver hallmarking in India is still voluntary, as of October 2026. Even so, any silver piece that is hallmarked now must carry a HUID.

In June 2026, BIS Director General Sanjay Garg said mandatory silver hallmarking would come gradually. GJEPC's Solitaire magazine reported his remarks. No date has been fixed. Meanwhile, the system is growing. BIS had about 230 silver hallmarking centres in 87 districts in September 2025. It now has 341 centres across 102 districts, according to an August 2026 newsonair report. Over 77 lakh silver pieces have been hallmarked with HUID since 1 September 2025.

BIS's advice is simple. Look for the hallmark, verify the HUID, buy from a BIS-registered jeweller, and keep the invoice. Our pillar guide on 925 vs pure silver jewellery covers hallmark grades across all silver pieces.

Shop Tests That Don't Prove Silver Purity

A magnet test proves nothing about purity. Silver isn't magnetic, but neither is copper, brass or German silver. Smell tests are no better, so rely on the hallmark and HUID.

How Many Grams Is a Silver Necklace Set?

A silver necklace set has no standard weight. A fine pendant set can weigh under 10 g, while a hasli with jhumkas weighs several times more. Always ask for the net weight of each piece, written separately.

Four of our listed silver necklaces show the spread. The Eye Leaf Line Silver Necklace weighs 8.22 g. The Blossom Ring Silver Necklace is 24.72 g, and the Tri Arc Line Silver Necklace is 27.71 g. Those are necklaces alone, so earrings add to the total.

Net weight is the metal only. Gross weight includes stones, beads or thread. On a stone-set piece, the gap between the two can be large, and you shouldn't pay silver rates for glass.

How Weight and Making Charges Set the Price

The price of a silver necklace set in India depends on net weight, purity and making charges, plus GST. The silver value is net weight × purity × that day's silver rate. Making charges pay for labour and rise with fine detail.

That's why two similar-looking sets can differ in price. Biswakarma product pages show purity, net weight and a full price breakup, so you can see each part. Our lightweight necklace price and weight guide walks through the maths with gold. The same per-gram method appears in our silver plate price guide.

Can You Get a Silver Necklace Set Under ₹10,000?

Yes, if you keep the weight low. On 6 October 2026, the 8.22 g Eye Leaf Line necklace was listed at ₹8,515 on our shop. Add studs, and a full set can still land near ₹10,000.

Heavier stone-set or hasli designs won't fit that budget, so look at pendant sets or a light choker.

Which Silver Necklace Set Suits Which Occasion?

The right silver necklace set depends on how long you'll wear it and what you'll wear it with. Light, smooth designs suit long days. Heavier, detailed sets suit a few hours at an event.

Simple Silver Necklace Sets for Daily Wear and Office

For daily wear, pick a lightweight silver necklace set under about 10 g, with no sharp edges or hanging bells. Bright 925 is easier to keep clean at home, since a polishing cloth restores it. A pendant set with studs is the easiest office choice.

Sets for Puja, Festivals and Sarees

For puja and festivals, oxidised silver sets with temple or tribal motifs are the classic pick. An oxidised silver necklace set with jhumka earrings suits cotton and silk sarees especially well. Match the necklace to the blouse: a choker for a deep neckline, a long haar for a high one.

Our jhumka design guide helps you pick earrings by face shape and occasion. If the puja also needs silver for the home mandir, see our silver pooja items price guide.

Which Silver Necklace Set Is Best for a Wedding?

For a wedding guest, a choker or hasli set in oxidised 925, or a stone-set bright design, works best. These hold their own beside heavier gold jewellery. The Blossom Ring Silver Necklace, with open rings and pavé discs, fits that brief.

Attending several functions? A silver set for the haldi or mehendi lets you save your gold for the main day. If you're weighing silver against gold for yourself, read our piece on the benefits of wearing gold first.

Silver Necklace Sets for Gifting

For gifting, choose a mid-weight 925 set in a classic shape, because you can't try it on the person. Ask for a hallmarked silver necklace and a printed bill with net weight, so the gift's value is clear. Biswakarma lets the recipient exchange a gifted gold or silver piece without the buyer, with no time limit. Stone weight, making charges and GST are deducted.

Complete the Look With Silver Earrings and Bangles

Our listed silver necklaces are sold on their own. For a silver necklace with earrings, you'll pair them yourself. Choose from our silver earrings, silver tops and silver bali hoops. Match the metal colour and the finish, not the exact motif.

To finish the look, add bangles from our silver bangle design guide or anklets from our silver payal guide.

How to Care for Oxidised and Bright Silver

Both finishes last longer when kept dry, away from perfume and in an airtight bag. They need opposite cleaning, though.

Does a 925 Silver Necklace Turn Black?

Yes, a 925 silver necklace can turn black over time. Silver reacts with sulphur in air, sweat and some cosmetics, forming a dark silver sulphide layer. That tarnish is a sign of real silver, not fake metal.

On bright 925, tarnish rubs off with a silver polishing cloth. Plated pieces behave differently, because the coating wears through and shows a different metal underneath.

How to Clean an Oxidised Silver Necklace

Clean an oxidised silver necklace with mild soap, lukewarm water and a soft toothbrush. Then dry it fully with a soft cloth. Never dip it in silver cleaning liquid, because the dip strips the dark finish along with the dirt.

A polishing cloth is fine on the raised parts only. Keep it out of the grooves, since that's where the oxidised contrast lives. If the finish fades, a jeweller can re-oxidise the piece.

Is 925 Silver Safe for Sensitive Skin?

925 silver suits many people, but it isn't safe for everyone, because it contains copper. Some people react to copper. Nickel is the more common trigger, and German silver contains nickel.

If you've had rashes from cheap jewellery, choose hallmarked 925 and watch your skin for a day or two. If a rash appears, stop wearing the piece. See a dermatologist if it doesn't clear.
