How Many Grams Should a Men's Gold Chain Be?

Most men should buy 8–12 grams for daily wear, or 15–20 grams if the chain is mainly for occasions. Your build and collar decide the rest.

5–7 g is thin and quiet. It hides under a formal collar and costs least. Our Figaro (4.88 g), Twist (5.45 g) and Classic (6.65 g) sit here. The catch: thin links stretch and snap more easily if they snag.

8–12 g is the daily-wear sweet spot. It's visible at an open collar and thick enough to take daily knocks. Our Recta (10.05 g), Rope (10.39 g) and Box Link (10.55 g) all fall in this band.

15–20 g reads clearly from across a room. It suits kurtas, open collars and broader necks. Our Classic Link (18.81 g) and Figaro Link (19.76 g) sit near the top of this band.

25 g and above is a heavy gold chain for men. Think weddings, big festivals or a man with a wide frame. Our Royal Spiral (29.83 g) and 37.04 g Box Link live here. You'll feel the weight by evening, and the cost runs past ₹5 lakh.

Lighter chains are also where the market is moving. The World Gold Council's India Q2 2026 report ties a near 60% yearly price rise to lighter, lower-carat buying.

10 Gram vs 20 Gram Gold Chain: Which Looks Right?

A 10 gram gold chain for men looks right for daily wear. Twenty grams suits occasions or a broad build. Take our Box Link at 10.55 g (₹1,77,850) and Classic Link at 18.81 g (₹3,17,096). The heavier chain costs ₹1,39,246 more.

That money buys visibility, not extra daily strength. Choose 20 grams if you mostly wear open collars or kurtas.

The latest men's gold chain designs are rope, box, Figaro, classic link, spiral, twist and recta.

Rope Chain: Twisted Strands That Hide Scratches

A gold rope chain for men twists small links into a spiral that looks like rope. The twist hides daily scratches and catches light from every angle. Our 10.39 g rope chain is a strong daily pick. Skip very thin ropes, because kinks are hard to straighten.

A gold box chain for men uses square, four-sided links joined at the corners. That shape spreads strain well, so the chain keeps its line. It also takes most pendants cleanly. Our box links come at 10.55 g and 37.04 g.

A Figaro gold chain for men repeats three short links and one long link. It's a flattened curb, so it lies flat on the chest. At 4.88 g it's delicate. At 19.76 g it's a proper occasion chain.

Classic link and curb chains use oval links twisted to lie flat against each other. They're the most traditional gents gold chain look in India. Our 18.81 g classic link sits in this family.

Spiral and Twist Chains: Texture That Catches Light

Spiral and twist chains wind the gold into a textured coil that looks richer than its weight. Our Twist Link (5.45 g) is light, while the Royal Spiral (29.83 g) suits weddings.

Recta and Mesh Chains: Flat, Modern Surfaces

Recta chains use flat rectangular links for a clean, modern finish. Our Recta Link at 10.05 g suits office wear. Fine mesh looks sleek. However, its many tiny joints make it a poorer daily choice.

Strongest Gold Chain Designs for Daily Wear

Box, rope and curb links are the strongest designs for daily wear. Fine mesh and bead chains are better kept for occasions. Here's how we'd rank them for a chain you never take off:

  1. Box link: square links share strain and hold their shape.

  2. Rope: dense twisted links resist pulling apart.

  3. Classic link or curb: simple links with few weak points.

  4. Figaro: strong when heavy, delicate below 6 g.

  5. Recta: sturdy links, but flat edges can catch fabric.

  6. Twist and spiral: fine for daily wear at a decent weight.

  7. Fine mesh and bead: keep these for occasions.

Thickness matters as much as design. A 19.76 g Figaro will outlast a 4.88 g Figaro by a wide margin. No chain is unbreakable, so treat any design gently.

For a wider comparison including women's styles, see our guide to gold chain designs for daily wear.

Solid vs Hollow Gold Chains: Which Should You Buy?

Buy a solid chain for daily wear. Hollow chains look thicker for the price, but they dent easily and are hard to repair.

A hollow link is a thin gold tube. Press it hard and it caves in. It also misleads at resale, because the buyer only weighs the gold.

At the counter, lift the chain. If it feels light for how thick it looks, ask whether it's hollow.

22K or 18K Gold Chain for Men: Which Suits You?

Choose 22K if you want more gold per gram and easy exchange later. Choose 18K if you're hard on your jewellery. A 22K gold chain for men is 91.6% gold, stamped 22K916. An 18K chain is 75% gold, stamped 18K750.

The extra alloy makes 18K harder and cheaper per gram. However, it holds less gold, so it fetches less at exchange.

Every chain in our men's range is 22K. If you do heavy manual work, a thicker 22K box or rope chain is the safer choice. For more on purity grades, our gold metal guide explains each one. Our men's gold jewellery and styling guide covers 22K vs 18K across rings and kadas.

What Length Gold Chain Should a Man Wear?

Most men wear a 20 or 22 inch chain. Go 22 to 24 inches if you add a pendant or have a broad neck.

  • 18 inch: sits at the base of the neck, close like a collar.

  • 20 inch: falls just below the collarbone, the most common choice.

  • 22 inch: sits on the upper chest and shows at an open collar.

  • 24 inch: hangs mid-chest and suits pendants and kurtas.

Our chains run from 17 to 24 inches.

To check, lay an old chain you like on a ruler.

Wearing a Pendant on a Men's Gold Chain

Yes, you can wear a pendant on a men's chain if the chain is strong enough to carry it. A box, rope or curb chain of 8 g or more takes most pendants. Very fine mesh or twist chains can kink under the load.

Check that the pendant's loop slides over the chain's clasp. Then pick a length one size longer, so the pendant sits on the chest, not the throat. Browse our gold pendant collection to pair one.

How Is a Gold Chain's Price Calculated?

A gold chain's price is net weight × the day's 22K rate, plus making charges and 3% GST.

Here's a worked example using our 10.39 g rope chain:

  1. Gold value: 10.39 g × ₹14,195 = ₹1,47,486.

  2. Listed price on 5 October 2026: ₹1,74,598.

  3. The remaining ₹27,112 is making charges plus GST.

To check any quote, ask for the net weight, 22K rate, making charge and GST in writing.

You can run your own numbers with our gold price calculator.

Does Chain Design Affect Resale or Exchange Value?

No. A chain's resale or exchange value comes from its net weight and purity, not its link style.

So a rope chain and a box chain of the same weight are worth the same. The making charges and GST you paid are not returned. Pick the design you'll enjoy wearing, not one sold as holding value.

We accept any gold ornament for exchange, including chains bought elsewhere. Exchange happens in person at our store, not online.

How to Check the Hallmark on a Gold Chain

A genuine hallmarked chain carries three marks: the BIS logo, the purity grade (22K916) and a six-digit HUID code. The Bureau of Indian Standards explains these three marks and how HUID replaced the old four-mark system. Since 1 April 2023, gold jewellery can't be sold without a HUID in mandatory hallmarking districts.

On a chain, look for the marks on the clasp or a small tag near it. Enter the HUID in the BIS CARE app's Verify HUID feature to confirm it.

Mandatory hallmarking covered 380 districts after the sixth phase in March 2026, according to All India Radio News. If tested purity falls short of the mark, buyers can claim twice the difference.

Gold Chain Clasp Care and Cleaning

The clasp takes the most strain on any chain, so check it every few months.

A lobster clasp has a spring-loaded trigger. It's the most secure type for daily wear. An S-hook slips through a ring, so open it by twisting sideways. Pulling the hook straight forward or back bends it out of shape. A box clasp locks a tab into a small box and holds well on heavy chains.

To clean your chain, soak it in warm water with a drop of mild soap. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and pat dry. Take it off before swimming, because chlorine dulls gold.

Gold Chain for Men Under 10 Grams

Three of our chains come in under 10 grams: the 4.88 g Figaro, 5.45 g Twist and 6.65 g Classic. They cost between ₹83,479 and ₹1,12,105, but their thinner links need gentler handling.

Before You Buy: A Quick Gold Chain Checklist

Before you pay, confirm the net weight, the 22K rate used, the making charge, GST and the HUID. Then try two lengths, because the same chain looks different at 20 and 24 inches.
