Best Kanbala Design Gold: Real 22K Styles in 2026

You saw a kanbala on Instagram, typed "kanbala design gold", and got plated pieces, bangles and South Indian domes. Here's the straight answer. In Bengali jewellery, a kanbala is a crescent-shaped gold earring that hangs from a stud and ends in a fringe.
What you pay depends on grams, not on the photo. So the weight guide, the price table and the hallmark check below matter more than any design board.
What is a kanbala earring? Pasha, crescent and jhoor
Take a kanbala apart at a Kolkata counter and you'll find three pieces.
The pasha is the stud top that sits on your lobe. It's often a small flower or a round boss. Worn alone, a large pasha is its own earring, covered in our pasa earrings buying guide.
The chand, or crescent body, hangs from the pasha. This is where the design work lives.
The jhoor, also called jhalor, is the fringe along the lower edge. It can be tiny gold beads, little bells or mukto (pearl) drops.
One honest caveat. The word isn't used the same way everywhere. Some sellers use it for a South Indian dome-shaped earring, and one bridal guide uses it for bangles. This guide sticks to the Bengali gold kanbala design, as Kolkata jewellers use the word. You'll also see it spelled kan bala.
A kanbala also isn't a kaan. The kaan climbs the curve of your ear toward the top. Our full kaan earrings guide explains how it carries that weight.
Traditional kanbala styles: naksha, thokai and pearl
Pierced naksha kanbala earrings
Naksha is pierced gold work. The karigar cuts the pattern right through the sheet, so light shows through the crescent. Leaves, paisleys and small birds are common motifs.
Naksha gives you a big face at a modest weight, because much of the metal is cut away. It's also slow hand work. As a result, the making charge goes up, which the price section explains.
Thokai (repoussé) kanbala crescents
Thokai, or repoussé, is raised work hammered from the back. The design stands up in relief and catches light instead of letting it through.
A thokai crescent feels solid in the hand. Still, ask whether the body is hollow. A hollow crescent looks identical, weighs less, and dents more easily in a jewellery box.
Gold kanbala earrings with pearl drops
A mukto jhoor swaps the gold beads for small pearls hung under the crescent instead. It softens all that yellow and pairs naturally with a gold pearl sitahar.
Ask one thing before you pay. Is the pearl weight inside the gram figure? You should pay the gold rate only on the gold.
Modern kanbala styles that weigh less
Most shops call something the "latest kanbala design" when they simply mean lighter. Here's what actually changes on a light weight kanbala design:
A smaller pasha. A plain round stud replaces the large flower top.
An open centre. The crescent becomes an outline, with the middle left empty.
Plain polish. A smooth crescent with one line of beading and no naksha.
A single pearl drop. One pearl at the centre replaces the full jhoor.
Each change removes metal, labour or both. Put two or three together and you get a kanbala for the office, not just the mandap.

Kanbala vs chandbali, kaan and jhumka
These four names get mixed up all the time. The shape, and where it sits on your ear, tells them apart.
Earring | Shape | How it sits | Usual occasion |
|---|---|---|---|
Kanbala | Crescent with a jhoor fringe | Hangs from a pasha stud on the lobe | Puja and weddings; light versions for daily wear |
Chandbali | Moon-shaped crescent | Hook, ring or small stud | Festive and party wear |
Kaan or half-kaan | Panel following the ear's curve | Post in the lobe, often a chain over the ear | Bridal and heavy festive |
Jhumka | Bell or dome | Stud or hook, drops straight down | Office to bridal, by size |
Kanbala vs chandbali. The overlap is real, and many counters use the names loosely. In Bengali usage, the pasha on top and the jhoor below make it a kanbala. A chandbali is named for its moon shape alone.
Kanbala vs kaan. A full kaan covers much of the outer ear, and a half-kaan stops shorter. A kanbala stays on the lobe, so it usually needs no ear chain.
Where the jhumka fits. Some kanbala jhumka earrings hang a small bell under the crescent. It adds swing and weight, so ask for the gram figure. For bell shapes on their own, see our latest jhumka designs.
