The price of a gold bala for women depends on one number most listings bury: net gold weight. A bala is a tube-shaped 22K gold bangle, and many are hollow or packed with lac inside.

So a bala that weighs 20 g on the scale may hold under 9 g of gold. Our 30/105 Star Dome Bala carries 8.69 g of gold in a 20.35 g piece. It was listed at ₹1,55,694 when we checked on 21 September 2026.

For the metal alone, the India Bullion and Jewellers Association's 22K benchmark was ₹14,081 per gram on 18 September 2026. Hold every price against that number, starting with our gold bala designs.

What a Gold Bala Is: Solid, Hollow or Lac-Filled

Asia InCH's entry on West Bengal jewellery describes the bala as a narrow gold or silver cylinder. In that account, it sits last on a married Bengali woman's wrist, after the shakha, iron bangle and churis. Its classic form has chased decoration and makara mukh, a pair of crocodile-head ends.

Shops use the word more loosely now. Some call any rounded tube bangle a bala. Others keep the name for pieces with makara ends. Check how a piece is built, because that decides the price.

A gold bala for women is a tube-shaped 22K gold bangle, popular in Bengali households. Many balas are hollow or filled with lac, so gold is only part of the weight. Price it on net gold weight. On 18 September 2026, IBJA's 22K benchmark was ₹14,081 per gram, before making charges and 3% GST.

Three builds cover nearly every bala you'll see in a shop:

  • Solid: gold all the way through. It's the heaviest option for its size, so it costs the most.

  • Hollow: a gold shell with air inside. You get size and shine for fewer grams.

  • Lac-filled: a gold shell packed with lac, a natural resin. The lac filling supports deep naksha, or hand-chased pattern work.

Is a Lac-Filled Gold Bala Real Gold?

Yes. The shell is 22K gold at 916 fineness, the same alloy as a solid bala. The lac gives support and body. What matters is that you pay the gold rate on net weight only.

A gold-plated or brass bala is a different thing. It isn't gold, and it shouldn't carry a BIS gold hallmark. If there's no HUID (the piece's six-character hallmark ID) you can verify, don't pay a gold price.

Latest Gold Bala Designs for Women by Net Weight

There's no standard weight for a gold bala. Our two listed designs hold 7.73 g and 8.69 g of gold. Their gross weights run from 18 to 20 g, and the rest is lac.

That's why the designs below are grouped by net gold, not by motif. Each band shows the metal value at IBJA's 18 September 2026 rate of ₹14,081 per gram. Making charges and 3% GST come on top. Browse the full gold bala collection for current stock.

Metal value: ₹1,40,810 to ₹2,81,620 at the same IBJA rate, before making charges and GST.

Over 20 g Net: Gold Bala for Wedding Trousseaus

Metal value: above ₹2,81,620 before making charges and GST.

Trousseau budgets stretch fast here. If yours is tight, compare a lighter lac-filled pair. Deep naksha on a hollow body can look as full on the wrist as a heavier piece.

Gold Bala Price Today: The Bill in Three Lines

IBJA's rate of ₹14,081 per gram on 18 September 2026 is a benchmark. It leaves out GST and making charges. Your jeweller's own board rate can differ, so check today's gold rate in Kolkata before you buy.

Every bala bill comes down to three lines:

  1. Metal: net weight × the day's 22K rate.

  2. Making charges: the labour for the design.

  3. GST: 3% of lines 1 and 2 added together.

Here's a worked example for an 8 g net bala. The ₹15,000 making charge is an illustrative figure for the maths, not our rate.

Divide that total by net weight and you get ₹16,435 per gram of gold. That's what a gold bala really costs per gram today. It will always sit above the IBJA rate.

Watch for listings that work out near ₹6,700 per gram of gold. With the benchmark above ₹14,000, those prices are out of date. Check any quote with our gold price calculator for jewellery bills.

GST on a Gold Bala Is 3% of the Whole Bill

Some bills and blogs charge 3% on the gold and 5% on making charges. That's wrong for a retail sale. The GST Council's gems and jewellery FAQ settles it in Question 7.

GST is 3% of the total transaction value, even when making charges are shown separately. The 5% rate covers job work between businesses, such as a craftsman making pieces for a jeweller. In the example above, the wrong method adds ₹300 of extra tax.

Net Weight vs Gross Weight on a Gold Bala

Gross weight is everything on the scale: gold, lac and enamel. Net weight is the gold alone. It's the only weight that should be charged at the gold rate.

On the Star Dome Bala, 11.66 g of the 20.35 g gross isn't gold. That's about 57%. The Royal Vine Bala is similar, with 10.65 g of its 18.38 g gross as filler.

Two balas of the same size can hold very different amounts of gold. At ₹14,081 a gram, three extra grams add ₹42,243 of metal before tax.

Find both weights on the tag and on the bill. Then check that the metal line uses net weight. If only one weight is shown, ask which one it is.

The same logic applies if you exchange the bala later. Expect the gold to be valued on net weight after testing, with nothing for the lac. Get the shop's exchange terms in writing when you buy.

Gold Bala for Women: Daily Wear, Wedding or Puja

Gold Bala for Daily Wear and the Office

A bala works as an everyday piece if you choose the shape well. Pick low relief, rounded ends and a width that clears your watch strap. A simple ladies gold bala design wears better at a desk than a domed or enamelled one.

22K gold is soft. Any bala will pick up fine scratches, and a hard knock can dent it. That's true of solid and hollow pieces alike.

Here's the trade-off. If you type all day, even a slim bala will tap against the laptop. A thin fitting churi or a flat bracelet may suit office hours better.

Bengali Bridal Gold Bala with Shakha Pola

At a Bengali wedding, the bala usually goes on after the shakha, pola and noa. Match its width and finish to the rest of the stack. Our guide to pola bangles and their custom explains where each piece comes from.

Matching an inherited bala? Weigh it and read its hallmark first. Hallmarks from before 1 July 2021 carry no HUID, so an older piece may show different marks. For the full set and budget, see our bridal jewellery buying guide.

Gold Bala for Durga Puja and Festive Days

Puja shopping crowds the counters, and a sizing mistake takes time to fix. Buy a few weeks early if you can. A textured or engraved bala suits Puja evenings, when you'll want more detail than at work.

Do You Need One Gold Bala or a Pair?

Either works. One bala suits office wear, while a pair balances a bridal or Puja look. If you buy a pair, BIS's hallmarking FAQ says each bangle must carry its own hallmark with a different HUID.

Gold Bala Size: How to Measure Before You Buy

Bangle size is set by inner diameter, the width across the inside. To find yours:

  1. Take a bangle that fits you comfortably.

  2. Measure straight across the inside, edge to edge, in millimetres.

  3. No bangle at home? Squeeze your hand as if slipping one on. Measure around the widest point, then divide by 3.14.

Our product pages list sizes such as 24 and 26. Ask the shop team what inner diameter a size means before you order online.

Some shops sell a sarada bala design with two openings. It can help if your knuckles are much wider than your wrist.

Can a Hollow Gold Bala Be Resized?

Usually not by much. Stretching a hollow or lac-filled bala can distort the naksha, so many jewellers won't attempt it. A solid bala allows small changes. Dents can often be repaired, but get the piece inspected first. The cheapest fix is buying the right size.

Five Checks on a Gold Bala Before You Pay

Run these on any gold bala for women before money changes hands.

  1. A hallmark on each piece. Look for the BIS logo, 22K916 and a six-character HUID. In areas under mandatory hallmarking, sale without HUID hasn't been allowed since 1 April 2023.

  2. A verified HUID. Enter it in the BIS Care app's Verify HUID feature. Match the details to the piece in your hand.

  3. Both weights on the bill. Net and gross should be printed, with gold charged on net only.

  4. An itemised invoice. Rate, net weight, making charges and 3% GST on the total, each on its own line.

  5. The hallmarking fee, understood. From 14 September 2026, BIS raised the gold hallmarking fee to ₹75 per article, up from ₹45. Jewellers pay it to the hallmarking centre. It's a trade cost, not a line you should expect on your bill.

BIS's own FAQ page still listed ₹45 when we checked on 21 September 2026. Still unsure about a piece? The same FAQ says any recognised hallmarking centre will fire-assay it for ₹200. Our gold purity checklist covers the rest.
