Is Platinum Costly or Gold? Rates, Resale & Which to Buy

Key takeaways
Gold is costlier than platinum per gram in India. On 6 October 2026, IBJA rates were ₹13,491 per gram for 22K gold and ₹5,998 for pure platinum. A platinum ring weighs roughly 11% more than the same gold design, yet usually costs less in metal. Gold is far easier to resell or exchange in India.
If you’re asking whether platinum is costly or gold, the answer in India today is gold. On 6 October 2026, the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) rate put 22K gold at ₹13,491 per gram. Pure platinum was ₹5,998 per gram that same morning. So gold costs more than twice as much per gram.
A finished ring is different. Its price also depends on weight, making charges and 3% GST, which can shrink the gap at the counter. This guide is for anyone choosing an engagement ring, couple bands or a gift. It prices the same ring in both metals, in rupees. It also covers resale, because in India, how easily a metal sells back matters as much as its sticker price.
Platinum vs Gold Rate Today (6 October 2026)
Gold costs about 2.5 times more than platinum per gram at today’s benchmark rates. Here’s how each purity compares.
Metal | Purity | Rate per gram | Rate per 10 g |
|---|---|---|---|
24K gold | 999 | ₹14,728 | ₹1,47,278 |
22K gold | 916 | ₹13,491 | ₹1,34,907 |
18K gold | 750 | ₹11,046 | ₹1,10,459 |
Platinum | 999 | ₹5,998 | ₹59,980 |
These are IBJA opening (AM) rates for 6 October 2026, taken from IBJA’s daily benchmark rate page. They exclude 3% GST and making charges. Even 18K gold costs about 1.8 times platinum’s rate per gram.

On a per-gram basis, there’s no real debate today about whether platinum is costly or gold. Some rate pages still claim platinum costs two or three times more than gold. That hasn’t been true for years.
Why Is Platinum Cheaper Than Gold If It’s Rarer?
Platinum is cheaper because its price follows factory demand, while gold’s price follows investors and central banks. Rarity alone doesn’t set a price. Demand does.
The Royal Society of Chemistry notes that about half of platinum demand each year goes into catalytic converters. These are the exhaust cleaners fitted to vehicles. So when car sales or diesel use slow down, platinum demand slips with them.
Gold works on a different engine. Central banks hold it as a reserve, and Indian families buy it as savings. That makes gold a safe-haven asset, something people buy when markets get scary.
Supply matters too. Most mined platinum comes from South Africa, with Russia a distant second. Trouble in either country can jolt the price.
Many pages still describe a “platinum deficit” for 2026. That’s out of date. In its Q2 2026 Platinum Quarterly report, the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC) forecasts a 265,000-ounce surplus for 2026. Its earlier forecast was a 297,000-ounce deficit.
WPIC says the shift comes mainly from investors selling platinum in the first half of 2026. Even so, above-ground stocks stay thin. WPIC expects them to cover only about 3.4 months of global demand by the end of 2026.
Same Ring, Two Metals: The Real Rupee Difference
For the same ring design, platinum usually costs far less in metal than 22K gold, even though it weighs more. Let’s work through a plain band that weighs 5 g in 22K gold.
How Much Heavier Is a Platinum Ring?
A platinum ring weighs roughly 11% more than the same design in gold. Platinum is denser, meaning more weight fits into the same space. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s platinum data page lists its density at 21.5 g/cm³, against 19.3 g/cm³ for gold.
So your 5 g gold band becomes about 5.6 g in platinum. This estimate uses pure-metal densities. Real alloys differ, and 22K gold is lighter than pure gold, so the actual gap can be wider. Always ask for the weighed figure.
What the Metal Costs at Today’s Rates
At 6 October 2026 IBJA rates, the gold band’s metal is worth far more:
22K gold: 5 g × ₹13,491 = ₹67,455
Platinum: 5.6 g × ₹5,998 = ₹33,589
That’s a difference of about ₹33,900 on metal alone. The gold version costs roughly double.
Adding Making Charges and 3% GST
The gap narrows once labour and tax come in, but it rarely closes. GST is 3% of the full bill, metal plus making, for both metals.
Cost item | 22K gold ring | Platinum ring (bullion rate) | Platinum ring (40% store premium) |
|---|---|---|---|
Weight | 5 g | 5.6 g | 5.6 g |
Rate per gram | ₹13,491 | ₹5,998 | ₹8,397 |
Metal value | ₹67,455 | ₹33,589 | ₹47,023 |
Making charge | 12%: ₹8,095 | 20%: ₹6,718 | 20%: ₹9,405 |
Subtotal | ₹75,550 | ₹40,307 | ₹56,428 |
GST at 3% | ₹2,266 | ₹1,209 | ₹1,693 |
Total | ₹77,816 | ₹41,516 | ₹58,121 |
Platinum making charges tend to run higher. It melts at 1,768°C against gold’s 1,064°C, so casting and finishing need more skill and equipment.
So if you’ve wondered whether platinum is costly or gold for an actual ring, the table answers it: gold. Look at the third column. Even if a store priced platinum 40% above the bullion rate, the ring would still cost about ₹19,700 less.
Why a Platinum Ring Can Still Cost More Than Gold
A platinum ring costs more than a gold ring mainly when you aren’t comparing like with like. Here’s where quotes usually drift:
You’re comparing it with a lighter 18K or 14K gold ring, or a thinner gold band.
The store’s platinum jewellery rate sits well above the bullion rate.
Platinum designs are often made thicker, so the ring weighs much more than 5.6 g.
Brand certificates, packaging and a higher making charge are bundled into one price.
Before you pay, ask for the weight, the rate per gram and the making charge, each written separately. That one step makes any two quotes comparable.
Platinum Jewellery Rate vs Platinum Bullion Rate
The bullion rate is the price of raw, pure platinum. The jewellery rate is what a store charges per gram of finished Pt 950. That alloy is 95% platinum and 5% other metals.
IBJA’s ₹5,998 figure is a 999 bullion rate, before GST. For gold, IBJA also publishes 916 and 750 rates that stores can follow. For platinum, it publishes only the 999 rate.
That’s why the “platinum rate” on a store board may not match what you saw online. It isn’t automatically a trick. The store may be quoting Pt 950, adding its margin, or including making in the rate.
Here’s a useful anchor. At today’s bullion rate, the pure platinum inside 1 g of Pt 950 is worth about ₹5,698. Ask whether a quote is per gram of Pt 950 or of pure platinum, and whether making is extra.
Was Platinum Ever Costlier Than Gold?
Yes, platinum cost more than gold for most of the 1990s and 2000s, until early 2015. So the answer to whether platinum is costly or gold has flipped before. London benchmark prices show platinum has stayed below gold almost continuously since mid-January 2015.
Platinum climbed above $2,000 an ounce in early 2008, well over gold at the time. After 2015, Europe’s turn away from diesel cars, following the Volkswagen emissions scandal, cut a major source of demand.
Could Platinum Become Costlier Than Gold Again?
It could, but nobody can say when, and 2026 data doesn’t point to it soon. With gold unchanged, platinum would need to climb about 145% just to draw level with 24K gold.
That’s a big ask for a metal whose 2026 market is forecast in surplus. Don’t choose a wedding ring on that bet.
Durability, Daily Wear and Skin Sensitivity
Platinum holds up better than 22K gold in a ring worn every day, but it still scratches. A scratch on platinum mostly pushes metal aside. Over time, that builds a soft grey sheen called patina, a dull lived-in finish that a polish can remove.
22K gold is soft. It scratches and bends more easily, and each polish takes away a tiny bit of metal. That’s why many diamond rings use 18K gold, which holds stones more firmly.
Skin is the other question. Pt 950 contains very little besides platinum, so reactions are uncommon. Nickel is the usual cause of metal allergies, and some white gold alloys contain it. Still, no metal suits every skin, so “100% hypoallergenic” claims go too far.
If cheap jewellery makes your skin itch, ask what the alloy contains before you buy. Buying for a child? Our kids’ silver bangle safety guide covers what to check first.
Is White Gold the Same as Platinum?
No. White gold is real gold mixed with white metals, usually plated with rhodium, a hard and bright white coating. That plating wears off with use, so the ring may need re-plating every so often.
White gold is priced as gold. At the 18K (750) rate of ₹11,046 per gram, it costs about 1.8 times platinum per gram. Our metal guide explains how the common purities compare.
Resale, Exchange and Purity Checks in India
Gold is far easier to sell or exchange in India than platinum. It has a national hallmark system and a deep buyback market.
The Bureau of Indian Standards hallmarking FAQ states that only gold and silver are under hallmarking at present. So claims that platinum hallmarking is mandatory in India are wrong.
Hallmarked gold carries a HUID, a six-digit unique ID code. You can check it in the BIS Care app. Learn how a BIS hallmark differs from a plain “hallmark” claim, and how to check gold purity before you buy.
For platinum, ask for a Pt 950 purity certificate. Make sure the bill states purity and weight too, and keep both papers safe.
Exchange is where gold pulls ahead. The World Gold Council’s Q2 2026 India report says retailers saw exchange volumes rise 10% to 20%. In some stores, exchanges made up as much as 70% of sales.
Platinum has no such network. Do jewellers buy back platinum in India? Some do, mostly the store or brand that sold it. Others won’t take it at all.
Can you exchange platinum jewellery for gold? Sometimes, though rarely at full metal value. Get the buyback and exchange terms in writing before you pay.

Which Should You Buy, Gold or Platinum?
Knowing whether platinum is costly or gold is only half the decision. For most Indian families, gold is still the smarter buy. Platinum suits you if you want a white metal, plan to wear it daily and don’t expect to resell it.
For an Engagement Ring or Couple Bands
Platinum makes sense for a white-metal band you’ll wear for decades. It also costs less in metal than the same 22K design.
Gold makes sense if you want the traditional look, or if resale matters to your family. A diamond ring set in 18K gold gives you sparkle with gold’s exchange value. Browse ladies’ gold rings or diamond ladies’ rings, and see our bridal jewellery guide for the full wedding set.
For Daily Wear and Men’s Rings
Is platinum better than gold for daily wear? For a plain band worn every day, yes, because it resists wear better than 22K gold.
Platinum or gold for a men’s ring comes down to look and budget. Men’s rings are often heavier, so platinum’s lower rate saves more on metal. Gold still wins on resale. See our gents’ gold ring designs for Indian men, shop gents’ rings, or look at diamond gents’ rings.
Want a white-metal look for much less? A silver kada for men or silver gents’ rings cost a fraction of either metal.
As an Investment
Is platinum a good investment compared to gold? It’s the riskier choice. Platinum swings with car-industry demand, has no BIS hallmark, and is harder to sell in India.
Gold has central bank buying and a huge local exchange market behind it. Neither metal guarantees returns, and jewellery is a weak investment either way, because making charges and GST don’t come back. For large sums, speak to a SEBI-registered investment adviser.
As a Family Heirloom
Gold is the better heirloom metal in India. A 22K piece can be reworked into new designs or exchanged by the next generation, at almost any jeweller. A plain gold chain is a common place to start.
