Gold Making Charges: Per-Gram vs Percentage, Made Easy

Gold making charges are the jeweller's labour fee, billed per gram or as a percentage of gold value. To compare, multiply the percentage by today's gold rate to get rupees per gram. For a retail purchase, GST is 3% on the full value, including making. Making charges and GST are generally not returned when you exchange or sell.

Gold making charges are the labour fee a jeweller adds on top of the gold's value. Shops bill them two ways: a fixed rupee amount per gram, or a percentage of the gold value. So before you choose a design, ask the counter one thing: is making per gram or a percentage? In our 10 g chain example below, that answer alone moves the bill by ₹10,506.

For a retail purchase, GST is 3% on the whole bill, making included. This guide is for first-time buyers in Kolkata and nearby districts, shopping for a wedding, Puja or Dhanteras. You'll learn to check any quote on a phone calculator in under a minute.

Every figure here uses the Kolkata 22K gold rate of ₹13,500 per gram, as of 17 October 2026. The bills below are worked examples built on that rate, not customer invoices.

What Are Gold Making Charges on a Jewellery Bill?

Gold making charges pay the karigar (the goldsmith) and the workshop for cutting, shaping, joining and finishing your piece. On the bill, they sit as their own line, after the gold value and before GST.

The gold value is simple maths. It's the net weight, meaning gold only, multiplied by the day's rate for that purity. 22K gold is 91.6% pure, which is why it's stamped 916, and 18K is stamped 750. Our gold purity chart shows every karat side by side.

The gold rate is the same for every shop on a given day, and GST is fixed by law. Making is different. It's the one line on the bill that each shop sets for itself, which is why it deserves your attention.

How Do Per-Gram and Percentage Making Charges Work?

Per-gram making charges stay fixed in rupees, while percentage making charges move with the gold rate. That one difference explains most of the confusion at the counter.

Per-Gram Making Charges: A Fixed Rupee Rate

A per-gram making charge is a flat rupee amount multiplied by the net weight. Take ₹600 per gram as an example figure. A 10 g chain then carries ₹6,000 in making. If gold rises next week, that ₹600 stays ₹600. You'll also hear this called flat or fixed making.

A percentage making charge is a share of the gold value, so it grows whenever gold gets dearer. At 12%, a 10 g chain with ₹1,35,000 of gold carries ₹16,200 in making. Some shops fold making and wastage into one line called VA, short for value addition.

How to Convert a Percentage Into Rupees Per Gram

To convert, multiply the making percentage by today's gold rate per gram. The rule fits on one line:

Per-gram equivalent = making % × today's gold rate

At ₹13,500, 8% works out to ₹1,080 per gram. Going the other way, ₹600 per gram is only 4.4% of the gold value (600 ÷ 13,500). Here's the conversion at the 17 October 2026 rate:

Worked Example 1: A 10 g Chain Billed Per Gram

A plain 10 g 22K chain with ₹600 per gram making comes to ₹1,45,230 with GST. Here's how each line is built:

Look at the GST line first. It's one 3% charge on ₹1,41,000, with no separate rate for making. Then look for what's missing: there's no wastage line. If a bill you're handed shows one, ask what it covers.

Worked Example 2: The Same Chain Billed at 12%

The same 10 g chain with 12% making comes to ₹1,55,736, which is ₹10,506 more than Example 1.

Same weight, same purity, same chain. Only the making line changed, and it pulled the GST up with it.

Converted, 12% is ₹1,620 per gram, against ₹600 per gram in Example 1. That's how two shops can quote very different totals for identical weight. Neither quote is hidden. You just can't compare them until they're in the same unit.

Which Is Cheaper, Per-Gram or Percentage Making?

Whichever quote works out lower in rupees per gram is cheaper on the day you buy. So convert first, then compare. For a plain machine-made chain or a plain churi, ask for a per-gram quote. It's easier to check, and it doesn't climb when gold does.

Why Making Charges Rise When the Gold Rate Rises

Percentage making rises with the gold rate because it's calculated on the gold value, not on the work. Suppose gold moves from ₹13,500 to ₹14,500 a gram. That's a what-if for the maths, not a forecast.

At 12%, making on the 10 g chain then goes from ₹16,200 to ₹17,400. The karigar did no extra work, but you'd pay ₹1,200 more anyway. At ₹600 per gram, making stays ₹6,000 at either rate.

When a Percentage Quote Is Still Fair

A percentage quote is fair when its per-gram equivalent matches the extra work in the piece. Filigree, nakshi work and heavy bridal sets take far more karigar hours than a plain chain. Higher making on those is reasonable.

The warning sign is a high percentage on a plain, machine-made piece. Convert it. If the per-gram figure looks far above other quotes you've collected, say so politely at the counter.

Is GST on Gold Making Charges 3% or 5%?

GST on gold making charges is 3% for a retail jewellery purchase, charged on the full bill value including making.

That answer comes from the government, not from a shop. The GST Council's sectoral FAQ on gems and jewellery takes up this exact case. A jeweller sells a chain and shows making separately on the bill. The FAQ answers that GST is 3% of the total transaction value. Printing making on its own line doesn't change the rate.

The 5% rate belongs to a different transaction called job work. Job work means a karigar making pieces for a jeweller. According to the same FAQ, a registered job worker pays 5% GST on job charges only. That bill goes from the karigar to the shop, and you never see it. The West Bengal Commercial Taxes Directorate's GST FAQ gives the same answers for this state.

Several finance blogs that rank for this topic still tell buyers to add 3% on gold and 5% on making. On Example 2, that wrong method would add ₹324. The working: 3% of ₹1,35,000 is ₹4,050, and 5% of ₹16,200 is ₹810. Together that's ₹4,860, instead of the correct ₹4,536.

So if your retail bill splits GST into two rates, ask why. On a proper itemised tax invoice, jewellery usually appears under HSN code 7113 (articles of jewellery). Tax rules can change, so for anything unusual, check the latest notification or ask a tax adviser.

Net Weight vs Gross Weight: The Stone-Set Trap

Making charges should be worked out on net weight, the gold alone, never on gross weight with stones included. Gross weight is the whole piece on the scale. Net weight is gross weight minus stones, pearls, lac or wax filling.

On a plain chain, the two numbers match. On Bengali stone-set pieces, they don't. A pola carries a red core under its gold work. A pearl sitahar carries pearls and thread between gold sections. Crystal pieces carry stones too. If making is charged on gross weight, you pay labour rates on material that isn't gold.

Worked Example 3: A Pearl Sitahar, Net vs Gross

Charging making on gross weight instead of net weight adds ₹4,326 on this example sitahar. Take a gross weight of 30 g, with 6 g of pearls and thread, leaving 24 g of net gold. Use ₹700 per gram making as the example rate.

The difference is ₹4,326, paid for labour on pearls rather than gold. The gold value must also use net weight: 24 × ₹13,500 = ₹3,24,000. Charging the gold rate on all 30 g would add ₹81,000 for metal that isn't there.

Making Charges vs Wastage vs Hallmarking Charge

Making pays for labour, wastage covers gold said to be lost during work, and hallmarking pays for purity testing. They're three separate things, and a fair bill keeps them apart.

Wastage is usually a percentage of the gold weight, added on top of it. Some shops show it as its own line, and others fold it into making or VA. A 3% wastage on 10 g adds 0.3 g, or ₹4,050 at today's rate. That's real money. Ask for making and wastage combined into one per-gram figure, then compare that number across shops.

Hallmarking is not part of making. The Bureau of Indian Standards sets the hallmarking fee at ₹45 per piece for gold jewellery, whatever the weight. So if a bill lists hallmarking separately, it should be small, and it shouldn't grow with weight. BIS also lets you check any HUID through the Verify HUID feature in its BIS Care app.

HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification, a code laser-marked on each piece. Since 1 April 2023, gold jewellery can't be sold without a 6-digit alphanumeric HUID. Do Making Charges Come Back When You Exchange Gold?

No, making charges and GST are generally not returned when you exchange or sell gold jewellery. When old gold comes back, a jeweller values the net gold only, at its tested purity and that day's rate. The labour and tax you paid aren't part of that value.

How to Check a Gold Jewellery Bill in 60 Seconds

A fair gold bill shows purity, weights, gold rate, making, other charges and GST as separate lines. Run through these in order:

Purity and HUID: 22K (916) or 18K (750), with a HUID that matches the piece.
Weights: gross and net both printed, with stone weight deducted on stone-set pieces.
Gold rate: the day's rate per gram for that purity, applied to net weight.
Making: per gram or percentage. Convert any percentage to rupees per gram.
Wastage or VA: if it's there, add it into your per-gram figure.
GST: one line at 3% on the taxable value.
Total: gold, making, other charges and GST should add up on your phone calculator.

A jeweller pays only for the pure gold in old jewellery, at the day's rate for its karat. Stones, lac, pearls and dirt are weighed out first. A purity shortfall, a melting charge or a lower exchange rate can reduce the credit. Original making charges and GST are never refunded.

In an old gold exchange in Kolkata, you're credited for the pure gold in your jewellery at that day's rate. Then the jeweller subtracts named deductions. These cover stones and other non-gold weight, any purity shortfall, and sometimes a melting charge or a lower exchange rate.

Making charges and GST from your original purchase never come back. So if you're trading a mother's chain or a broken bangle for wedding jewellery, ask for each cut on paper. Every fair deduction has a name, a number and a reason you can check.

How Is Old Gold Exchange Value Calculated?

Old gold exchange value is net gold weight times the per-gram rate for its tested karat, minus named deductions.

Exchange value = net weight (g) × day's rate for the tested karat − melting charge (if any)

Net weight is the gold alone. Gross weight is everything on the scale, including stones, lac and dust. The gap between those two numbers causes most arguments at the counter.

The rate side is simpler. Each karat has its own per-gram board rate, and the 22K rate already assumes 91.6% gold. Check today's gold rate in Kolkata and note the update time before you leave home.

What Do Jewellers Deduct on Old Gold?

Jewellers deduct for non-gold weight, for purity below what's claimed, and sometimes for melting loss or a rate gap. Each should appear as its own line, never as one vague percentage.

Weight That Isn't Gold: Stones, Lac, Solder and Dirt

Stone weight comes off first, because stones, beads and enamel add grams but hold no gold. A clean deduction weighs them separately. Alternatively, it uses the stone weight printed on your old bill.

Lac is the next big one. Lac is the hard resin filling many bangles. It can outweigh the thin gold shell around it, so it must come out before the gold is valued.

Solder and findings are trickier. Solder is the metal joining parts, and findings are hooks, screws and clasps. Older solder is often lower karat, so a repaired piece can test slightly lower.

Dirt is real but small. Years of soap and skin build up in carvings and hollow joints. Cleaning the piece first with these simple steps to clean gold jewellery at home removes that argument.

Purity: Tested Karat vs What You Were Told

Purity isn't a deduction in itself. You're paid for the gold the piece contains, so a 22K chain testing at 91.6% is credited as 22K.

The problem starts when a piece tests lower than its owner believed. A "22K" bangle reading 84% gets credited as roughly 20K. That's a real loss, but it's measured, not guessed.

Many shops test with an XRF machine, a non-destructive X-ray purity tester. It reads the surface in a minute or two. Fire assay, the melt-and-weigh lab method, is more exact but destroys the sample.

The Rate Gap: Selling Rate vs Exchange Rate

Some jewellers credit old gold at a lower per-gram rate than the one they sell at. This buy rate vs sell rate spread is the deduction most people never notice.

A ₹200 gap looks small on a board. On 9.4 g of gold, however, it's ₹1,880. So ask whether the exchange rate matches the selling rate on that day's board.

Melting Loss and Refining Charges

Melting loss is the small amount of weight lost when old jewellery is melted and refined. Heat burns off dirt, solder flux and a little metal.

Some shops charge a fixed percentage for this, often 1% to 3% . Others absorb it on exchange. Either way, the percentage should be named before weighing starts.

Why Making Charges and GST Don't Come Back

Making charges pay for labour and design, not metal, so no jeweller credits them back on exchange. Wastage, the gold lost during manufacturing, works the same way.

GST you paid on the original bill was a tax on that purchase. It doesn't travel with the gold. That's why a piece bought last year returns less than its bill, even at the same rate.

What a "0% Deduction" Offer Really Means

A "0% deduction" offer usually means no melting or refining percentage is charged. It doesn't mean you get back your original bill.

Stones and lac still come out. Purity is still tested. Original making charges and GST still don't return. Some offers also apply only when you buy above a set value, so ask what "0%" covers in writing.

Bengali Pieces That Need Extra Care at the Counter

At an old gold exchange in Kolkata, Bengali bridal pieces need the closest net-weight check. They carry more non-gold weight than most jewellery, and that's where disputes usually start.

Pola or Sakha With Gold Covering

Only the gold cover on a pola or sakha counts. The coral or conch underneath has no gold value, so the gross weight overstates the gold by a wide margin. Ask how the cover's weight will be found: by removing it, or by an estimate.

Lac-Filled Bangles Such as Bala and Chur

Many old Bengali bala and chur are hollow and lac-filled. The lac usually has to be heated out before the gold is weighed. Ask to see the weight after lac removal, not a percentage guess.

Pearl Mantasha and Pearl Necklaces

Hollow and Lightweight Pieces

Light, hollow designs trap dust and soap inside. They also carry more solder per gram than solid gold, so expect a closer purity check.

Worked Example: 10 g of Old 22K Gold, Rupee by Rupee

Here is one old 22K necklace valued three ways, using Biswakarma's posted 22K rate of ₹13,500 per gram. That rate was updated on 17 October 2026 at 11:50 am. Check today's figure before you rely on these numbers.

Say the necklace weighs 10.0 g gross. It has 0.6 g of stones, which leaves 9.4 g of net gold. The XRF test reads 91.6%, so it's credited as 22K.

The three shops are illustrations, not real quotes. Same necklace, same day, yet the credits differ by ₹4,380. Every rupee of that gap comes from two named lines.

Purity moves the number further. If the necklace had tested at 84% instead, its credit would fall by about ₹10,500.

Bill Lost, Another Shop's Gold, or No Hallmark?

You can exchange old gold without a bill, gold bought from another jeweller, and non-hallmarked gold. Value comes from the test and the scale, not the paperwork.

Exchanging Old Gold Without a Bill

Your mother's old chain isn't worth less because the bill is lost. Its purity can be tested in a few minutes. Still, a bill helps, because it shows stone weight and proves your purchase date for tax.

Gold Bought From Another Jeweller

A fair shop applies the same rule to every piece it tests. If a store cuts more for gold bought elsewhere, ask what that extra line is for.

Non-Hallmarked and Old Four-Mark Hallmarked Gold

BIS confirms consumers can sell old jewellery to jewellers, whether hallmarked or not. The same FAQ says a hallmark stays valid for the jewellery's whole lifetime. Inherited pieces without marks simply get tested.

Since HUID, a six-digit Hallmark Unique ID, began in July 2021, a BIS hallmark carries three marks. They are the BIS logo, purity and the HUID. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs confirmed in March 2023 that older four-mark jewellery stays valid.

GST and Income Tax When You Exchange Old Gold

You don't pay GST on old gold you hand over. An exchange can still create a taxable capital gain, though.

Is GST Charged on Old Gold Exchange?

No, an individual handing over old jewellery doesn't pay GST on it. In a July 2017 press release, CBIC clarified that such a sale isn't made in the course of business. So it isn't a taxable supply, and claims of "3% GST on old gold" are outdated. You still pay GST on the new jewellery you buy.

Is Old Gold Exchange Taxable in India?

Yes, it can be, because exchanging doesn't make a gain tax-free. Handing over the old piece and buying a new one are separate transactions. Any gain on the old piece may be taxable.

The Income Tax Department's capital gains rules treat jewellery held over 24 months as long-term. For transfers on or after 23 July 2024, long-term gains are taxed at 12.5%, without indexation. Jewellery held 24 months or less is short-term and taxed at your slab rate.

Exchange or Sell for Cash: Which Suits You?

Exchange usually suits you if you're buying new jewellery anyway. Selling for cash suits you if you need the money for something else.

Many jewellers credit slightly more on exchange than on a cash sale. You'll still pay making charges and GST on the new piece, though. So compare the full new bill, not the credit alone.

Can I watch the weighing and the purity test?
What's the gross weight, and what's the net weight after stones and lac come out?
What purity did the test show, and can I see the reading?
Is your exchange rate the same as today's selling rate?
Do you charge any melting or refining percentage? How much?
Will you give me a written slip with every line?

If a shop won't answer any of these plainly, get a second quote. On a 20 g piece, a gap of ₹200 per gram is ₹4,000.

1 bhori and 1 tola both weigh 11.664 grams. A bhori splits into 16 ana, 96 rati or 960 points. So 1 ana is 0.729 g and 1 rati is 0.1215 g. Gold bills in India must show grams, so multiply any bhori figure by 11.664 to check it.

1 bhori in grams is 11.664 g, and 1 tola in grams is the same 11.664 g. One ana is 0.729 g, one rati is 0.1215 g and one point is 0.01215 g. Bhori (ভরি, also said vori or bhari) is the Bengali unit many families still use for gold. If an aunt calls a wedding gift "dui bhori", this page turns that into grams you can check. That matters because every legal gold bill in India is written in grams. Rounding a bhori up to 12 g quietly costs you money.

How Many Ana, Rati and Points Are in 1 Bhori?

One bhori holds 16 ana, 96 rati and 960 points.

Masha is the North Indian split of the same tola. Bengal counts in ana instead.

Some pages claim a bhori has 10 ana. It doesn't. "Ana" means a sixteenth, just as 16 annas made one rupee until India decimalised its coins in 1957.

You may also see 0.12125 g given for one rati. Multiply that by 96, and the bhori shrinks to 11.64 g. The correct rati is 0.1215 g, which gives the full 11.664 g.

With the table, the common small weights are quick:

4 ana gold in grams: 4 × 0.729 = 2.916 g
6 ana: 6 × 0.729 = 4.374 g, so your grandmother's "chhoy ana" chain is about 4.37 g
8 ana gold in grams: 8 × 0.729 = 5.832 g, which is half a bhori

Why Is 1 Bhori 11.664 Grams? The 180-Grain Maths

A bhori weighs 11.664 g because it equals the tola, and the tola was fixed at 180 troy grains. A troy grain (an old precious-metal weight) is exactly 0.06479891 g.

A cream polish made for silver suits big plain surfaces, like a thali or glass with stubborn patches. Polishes clean by fine abrasion, so each use takes off a thin layer. Keep them for a few times a year.

Choose a polish labelled for silver, not a multi-purpose metal polish, which the Canadian Conservation Institute calls more abrasive. Avoid any product listing ammonia. According to the same note, ammonia dissolves copper in 925 silver, and trapped residue can later turn green.

Wash and dry the piece first.
Apply a pea-sized amount with a soft cotton cloth.
Rub with light, even strokes, turning the cloth often.
Wash off every trace with warm soapy water, especially from engraving.
Dry thoroughly.

Method 6: Professional Cleaning and Re-Polishing

A jeweller's clean is the right call for heirlooms, stone-set pieces, hollow idols, oxidised work and anything you're unsure about. A karigar can work around stones, refresh oxidised grooves and buff out scratches that home methods can't reach.

Oxidised Silver: How to Clean It and Keep the Black

To clean oxidised silver without removing the black, wash it briefly in soapy water. Then polish only the raised parts. The dark grooves are deliberate, and they're the same compound as tarnish. Anything that removes tarnish will strip them too, including the foil bath, dips and acids.

Swish the piece in warm soapy water for a minute.
Brush the surface lightly.
Rinse and dry at once.
Wrap a polishing cloth around one finger and rub only the high points.

If the black has worn patchy, a jeweller can re-darken it evenly.

Silver Jewellery With Stones, Pearls or Enamel

Clean stone-set silver with warm soapy water and a soft brush, but don't soak it. Many stones in silver jewellery are glued in or backed with foil, and a long soak can loosen them. Brush from the back of the setting, where grime collects.

For pearls, the GIA suggests a new, soft makeup brush and warm soapy water. Lay them flat on a towel to dry. Put perfume and lotion on before your pearls, never after. Enamel chips easily, so keep abrasives well away from it. Stone-set lockets, like several of our silver pendant designs for women, need this gentler routine.

Silver Payal With Ghungroo Bells

Clean a ghungroo payal with a soapy brush and a quick rinse, never a soak. Each bell is a hollow shell with a loose ball inside. Water that gets in stays there and keeps the inside damp.

Dip a soft toothbrush in warm soapy water.
Scrub the chain links and the outside of each bell.
Dip briefly in a bowl of clean water.
Shake each bell, pat dry, and leave it somewhere warm and airy for a few hours.
Buff with a polishing cloth.

Silver Idols, Hollow Diyas and Lac-Filled Pieces

Don't boil silver idols or hollow pooja items, and you don't need to boil solid ones either. Boiling pushes water and baking soda into seams, and heat can soften lac or wax filling. For a solid, plain piece, hot water from a kettle does everything boiling would.

Treat every idol as hollow unless you know it's solid. Dust it with a soft brush first. Then wipe it with a cloth wrung out in soapy water. Follow with a clean damp cloth and dry it well. Silver-Plated Items and German Silver

Clean silver-plated items with soap, water and the occasional light buff, nothing stronger. The silver layer is thin, and the Canadian Conservation Institute warns that any tarnish removal can damage plating. Once yellow brass shows through, only re-plating brings the silver back.

German silver needs the same gentle wash, then a thorough dry. Green or brown patches on it are copper and nickel corrosion, not tarnish. The foil bath won't touch them.

Are Vibhuti, Tamarind and Toothpaste Safe for Silver?

Traditional methods do remove tarnish, but most work by scraping or by acid. Use them rarely, and never on jewellery with stones.

Vibhuti or wood ash is a fine abrasive. It scrubs tarnish away, along with a little silver. Keep it for a rare scrub on plain, solid items.
Tamarind, lemon with salt, vinegar and ketchup are acidic. Acids dissolve tarnish but can etch the surface, and the Canadian Conservation Institute warns that acid dips can pit silver. Rinse within minutes, then wash with soap.
Toothpaste can clean silver, but it contains abrasives, and whitening pastes are harsher. It leaves fine scratches that dull the surface over time.
A baking soda paste is a mild abrasive. It's acceptable on plain, solid pieces now and then.

Our view is simple. Treat these as strong methods, not gentle ones, and keep them off oxidised, plated, pearl and stone-set pieces.

How to Clean Silver Utensils Used for Food

Wash silver thalis, glasses, batis and spoons used for food with dish soap after every use. Dry them straight away to avoid water spots. Salt, egg, lemon and pickle speed up tarnish, so don't leave food sitting in silver.

After a foil bath or polish cream, wash the piece twice with dish soap and hot water. Rinse well and dry. We couldn't find authoritative guidance on foil-bath residue on food utensils, so don't skip the second wash.

How Often Should You Clean Silver?

Clean silver you use lightly every week, and deep-clean only when gentle methods stop working.

Daily-wear jewellery and payals: wipe after wearing, then a soapy wash once a week.
Pooja items: wipe after each puja, then a soapy wash monthly or before festivals.
Utensils: wash after every use.
Foil bath: once or twice a year, for solid pieces only.
Polish cream: a few times a year, on large plain pieces.

The GIA recommends having jewellery checked by a professional every six months. That's a sensible rhythm for heirlooms and stone-set silver.

How to Store Silver to Prevent Tarnish in Humid Weather

Airtight storage prevents most tarnish, which means less cleaning and less silver lost. The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends sealing silver in polyethylene bags, ideally with silica gel and activated charcoal.

Dry every piece completely before storing it.
Seal each piece in its own zip bag and press out the air.
Add an anti-tarnish strip or a silica gel sachet to each bag.
Wrap pieces in acid-free tissue or a cotton pouch inside the bag, never wool or felt.
Keep rubber bands away from silver entirely.
Keep the mandir set away from the stove, if your home allows it.

During the monsoon, check bags every few weeks and replace damp sachets. The box your piece comes in from us protects it from scratches. When to Bring Silver to a Jeweller

Bring silver to a jeweller whenever it's too risky to clean silver at home. That includes:

An heirloom, or any piece with loose stones.
A hollow idol with black deep inside the seams.
Oxidised work that has worn patchy.
Plating worn through to brass.
Deep scratches, dents or broken joins.
Green patches that keep coming back.

Gold Purity Chart: 24K, 22K, 18K, 14K Karat & Fineness

A gold purity chart converts karat into real gold content. 24K is 99.5% to 99.9% gold, 22K (916) is 91.6%, 18K (750) is 75% and 14K (585) is 58.5%. In India, BIS hallmarks 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K, while 9K is voluntary. Price per gram should fall in step with purity.

This gold purity chart shows how much real gold sits in each karat sold in India. 24K is 99.5% to 99.9% gold, 22K is 91.6% (stamped 916), 18K is 75% (750) and 14K is 58.5% (585). Karat, percentage and fineness are three labels for one number.

BIS hallmarks six karats in India, plus a voluntary 9K grade, and every one is genuine gold. Use the chart before you buy jewellery, read a hallmark or exchange old gold. That way, the price you pay matches the purity you get.

Seven grades can carry a BIS hallmark in India, and each one has its own rate per gram.

Rates as of 5 October 2026. They are Kolkata retail board rates per gram, before making charges and GST. The 24K, 22K and 18K figures are published rates. Rows marked (est.) are our own maths: 24K rate × fineness ÷ 1,000. Rates move daily, so check the live gold rate on our rate page. These grades come from IS 1417, the Indian standard for gold fineness and marking. The Bureau of Indian Standards' hallmarking explainer lists the six mandatory caratages. It also gives sample codes such as 22K916, 18K750, 14K585, 20K833 and 23K958. Its 24K example is 995.

Hallmarking is mandatory only in notified districts, not across the whole country. The sixth phase took coverage to 380 districts, according to All India Radio's March 2026 report on the expansion. In that same statement, BIS described 9K as a voluntary grade.

How Do You Read Karat, Fineness and Percentage?

Divide the karat by 24 and you get the share of pure gold. For 22K, that's 22 ÷ 24 = 0.916, or 91.6%.

Fineness (gold parts per thousand) is the same figure without the decimal. So 91.6% becomes 916, and 75% becomes 750. Percentage is just fineness divided by 10.

Read a hallmark code the same way. 22K916 means 22 karat, with 916 parts of gold in every 1,000. 24K999 means 999 parts per 1,000, which is as close to pure as gold gets. The karat and the number always agree, because they describe one fact.

One spelling note. Karat (purity) is often written "carat" in India. On a diamond, though, carat means weight, not purity.

24K Gold (995/999): Coins, Bars and Pure Gold

24K is the purest gold you can buy, and in India it's sold mostly as coins and bars. Bullion (investment coins and bars) is usually 995 or 999 fine. Because almost nothing is mixed in, the price tracks the gold rate closely.

Why Isn't 24K Gold Used for Most Jewellery?

Pure gold is too soft to keep its shape through daily wear. BIS says this plainly in its hallmarking explainer: jewellery gold is always alloyed with other metals for strength.

A 24K ring scratches and bends easily. Prongs can't grip a stone for long, and thin links stretch. That doesn't make lower karats poor quality. It makes them practical.

22K Gold (916): India's Jewellery Standard

916 on gold jewellery means 91.6% pure gold. So 10 g of 22K jewellery holds about 9.16 g of pure gold. The other 0.84 g is alloy that adds strength.

22K keeps the deep yellow colour most Indian families expect. It also holds fine detail well, so it suits traditional work. Think of pola bangles and the tradition behind them, or a 22K gold mangalsutra and its price range. You can browse our gold pola collection to see 22K work up close.

22K has one honest weakness. For a daily chain or a ring you never take off, it's soft enough to dent. 18K holds up better there.

18K Gold (750): The Grade for Diamond Settings

18K is 75% gold, and that extra 25% alloy makes it firm enough to hold diamonds securely. It's the usual choice for stone-set rings and earrings, and for white or rose gold.

Watch the rate on the bill. On 5 October 2026, a gram of 18K cost ₹2,486 less than 22K. Paying 22K rates for an 18K piece would overcharge you ₹24,860 on 10 g.

14K Gold (585): Why It's 585 and Not 583

14K jewellery is stamped 585, meaning 58.5% gold, and it is a BIS-hallmarked grade in India. By the formula, 14 ÷ 24 gives 0.583, so 583 looks correct.

The World Gold Council's page on carat and purity explains the gap. Strictly, 14K should be 583. Most makers follow European practice and make it slightly over 14K, so the mark reads 585. The 585 stamp is not a mistake.

Buyers are moving this way. The World Gold Council's Gold Demand Trends India report for Q2 2026 notes a shift to lighter, lower-carat jewellery. The trade-off is real, though. 14K looks paler, and less gold means less value when you exchange it.

What Are 23K958, 20K833 and 9K375 Gold?

23K958 is 95.8% gold, 20K833 is 83.3% gold, and 9K375 is 37.5% gold. You'll see these less often than 22K or 18K.

23K sits just below pure gold. It's soft and uncommon in shops, but it's a full BIS grade.

20K is a mandatory BIS grade, though few shops carry it. If your old piece reads 20K833, it's genuine gold at 83.3%.

9K can be hallmarked in India, but only as a voluntary grade. It isn't banned, and it isn't mandatory either.

Global charts often list 10K too. 10K is not an Indian hallmark grade, so ignore it when you read a BIS mark.

What Metals Are Mixed Into Gold Jewellery?

Silver, copper and zinc make up the non-gold share in most yellow gold. The mix also decides the colour.

World Gold Council figures give one typical 22K yellow mix: 91.7% gold, 5% silver, 2% copper and 1.3% zinc. A typical 18K yellow alloy carries 15% silver and 10% copper. These are common recipes, not the only ones.

Colour changes with the alloy. More copper turns gold rose, and an 18K rose mix can carry about 22% copper. White gold uses palladium or silver, and is often plated with rhodium for shine. Our metal guide covers how each metal behaves.

More alloy also means more hardness. That's why 18K and 14K resist scratches better than 22K.

Silver follows the same parts-per-thousand logic. The number stamped on silver bangles, a silver bracelet for men or a silver pendant for women is fineness too. Gold Price by Karat: How to Calculate It Yourself

Multiply the 24K rate by the fineness, divide by 1,000, then multiply by the weight. That gives the gold value of any piece, using the fineness from the gold purity chart above.

Take an 8 g pair of 18K earrings. At ₹14,918 for 24K: 14,918 × 750 ÷ 1,000 × 8 = ₹89,508. Boards set 22K and 18K rates separately, so your answer may differ by a few rupees.

Worked Example: Pricing a 10 g 22K Gold Chain

Start with the gold value. 10 g × ₹13,675 = ₹1,36,750.

Next, add making charges. Say they come to ₹12,000; that's an example, not a quote. The subtotal is ₹1,48,750.

Then add 3% GST on that subtotal, which is ₹4,463. The bill comes to about ₹1,53,213.

Which Karat Has the Best Resale or Exchange Value?

Higher karats return more rupees per gram, because each gram holds more gold. 24K and 22K lead, and 14K trails.

Exchange value usually works like this: net gold weight × purity × the buying rate. Stones come off the weight first. Making charges and GST paid on the old bill don't come back.

So for equal pure gold content, the karat matters less than the hallmark and the deductions. No jeweller can guarantee a resale price for any karat, because the gold rate moves.

Quick Hallmark Check Before You Buy Gold

A current BIS hallmark has three marks: the BIS logo, the purity code (for example 22K916) and a six-character HUID. Hallmarks made before 1 July 2021 carried four marks instead.

How to Measure Bangle Size at Home: 2.2, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8

To learn how to measure bangle size at home, measure your folded hand across the knuckles, not your wrist. A rigid bangle has to slide over the widest part of your hand, so that's the number that counts. Then match it to the chart below, which is built from the exact inch.

Bangle Size Chart 2.2 to 2.10 in mm, cm and Inches

Every size here is the bangle's inner diameter, meaning the width across the inside. The circumference column is the inside edge measured all the way round. You can compare a thread reading with it directly.

Each step up adds ⅛ inch to the diameter. That's about 3.2 mm across, or close to 10 mm around the inside. The millimetre values use the exact inch of 25.4 mm, as defined in NIST's page on SI units of length.

What 2.4 or 2.6 Actually Means on a Bangle

Read a bangle size as two numbers, not a decimal. The 2 before the dot means 2 inches. The number after it counts sixteenths of an inch.

So 2.4 means 2 inches plus 4/16 inch. That's 2¼ inches, or 57.2 mm across the inside. Size 2.6 is 2⅜ inches, which is 60.3 mm or 6.03 cm.

This also explains the jump from 2.8 to 2.10. After eight sixteenths comes ten sixteenths, so 2.10 is bigger than 2.8. It's 2⅝ inches, or 66.7 mm. It isn't 2.1, and it isn't smaller.

Older jewellers sometimes call these steps annas, borrowing the old rupee that split into 16. You may also see odd sizes such as 2.3 or 2.5 on some shakha and pola. The logic holds: 2.3 is 2 and 3/16 inch (55.6 mm), and 2.5 is 58.7 mm.

Method 1: Measure a Bangle That Already Fits

This is the most reliable home method, because it measures a real bangle, not skin. You need one rigid bangle and a millimetre ruler.

Choose a round, rigid bangle that goes on with a gentle squeeze. Skip openable kadas, bracelets and anything you never take off.
Lay it flat on a table. Place the ruler across the inside, from inner edge to inner edge.
Read the widest point in millimetres. Then turn the ruler a quarter turn and measure again.
If the two readings differ by more than 1 mm, the bangle is slightly oval. Add them and halve the total.
Match your number to the inner diameter column above.

A reading of 60 mm in both directions points to 2.6. Don't include the metal's thickness. Only the open space inside matters.

Method 2: How to Measure Bangle Size at Home With Thread

To measure bangle size at home without a bangle, fold your hand as if slipping one on. Wrap a thread around the widest part of the knuckles. Measure the thread in millimetres and divide by 3.14. Then pick the first chart size at or above that number.

Here's how to get a clean reading with thread, a paper strip or a soft measuring tape.

Bring your thumb in towards your little finger, the way you do when putting on a bangle. Keep the hand relaxed.
Wrap the thread around the widest part, across the knuckles and the base of the thumb.
Hold it snug against the skin, not tight. Pinch or mark the point where the ends meet.
Lay the thread straight along a ruler and read it in millimetres.
Measure twice and keep the larger reading. Also measure the hand that will actually wear the bangle.

Cotton thread or a paper strip works best. Wool and elastic stretch, so they give a short reading.

Convert Your Hand Measurement to a Bangle Size

Divide your hand circumference by 3.14 (pi) to get a diameter. After that, choose the first size at or above that number.

Say your thread measures 18.8 cm. That's 188 mm ÷ 3.14 = 59.9 mm. The first size at or above 59.9 mm is 2.6, at 60.3 mm.

You can also skip the division. Compare your thread length straight with the circumference column instead. Here, 188 mm sits just under 189.5 mm, so the answer is still 2.6. That's all a bangle size calculator does.

Never round down. A bangle smaller than your hand reading will be a real struggle to get on.

No Measuring Tape or Ruler at Home?

A thread or a strip of paper does the tape's job. For the reading itself, any school ruler works.

No ruler either? A standard A4 sheet's short side is 210 mm. That's almost exactly the inner circumference of a 2.10 (209.5 mm). If your thread is longer than that edge, you'll need 2.12 or larger.

Between Two Bangle Sizes? A Clear Rule

Start with the first size at or above your hand number. Next, check the gap between that size and your number.

If the size is more than 1 mm wider than your hand number, it should slide on comfortably. When the gap is under 1 mm, expect a snug fit.

Snug is fine for a thin churi you rarely take off. It's a problem for anything wide, heavy or brittle. For example, a hand reading of 57.0 mm gives 2.4 (57.2 mm), with only 0.2 mm to spare.

Our advice: if you're in doubt with a solid gold bangle, go one size up. A slightly loose bangle can still be worn. One that won't cross your knuckles can't, and gold doesn't stretch.

Thin Fitting Churi vs Wide Bala and Kada

Width changes the fit. A thin churi can be tilted and rolled over the knuckles. A wide bala or kada can't tilt much, so it has to clear your hand almost straight.

That's why the same hand might wear a 2.4 churi but need a 2.6 bala. Flat inner walls also feel tighter than a rounded inside edge.

Should a kada be one size bigger than your bangle size? For a solid, wide kada, usually yes. An openable kada with a screw or hinge is different, since it opens around the wrist. Men's kadas use the same numbers, just further up the chart. You'll find them under gold Punjabi kada.

Sizing Shakha, Pola and Noa Bangles

Shakha is the white conch-shell bangle. Pola is the red bangle worn beside it, and noa is the iron bangle, often cased in gold.

Shakha can't flex at all, and forcing it can crack it. So never size shakha snug. Use the gap rule above and choose the roomier size when you're close.

Because shakha is cut from a natural shell, the inside is rarely a perfect circle. Measure it in two directions and average them, as you would with an oval bangle. Most pola is also wider than a fitting churi, so apply the wide-bangle rule.

With gold-bound shakha or pola, the inside measurement still decides the size. Ask whether the gold casing wraps inside the ring too, because that takes up room.

Noa follows the same logic. Treat a thin noa like a fitting churi and a broad one like a bala.

How to Measure an Oval Bangle

Measure the longest inside width and the shortest. Add them and halve the total. For example, 64 mm and 56 mm average to 60 mm, which is closest to 2.6.

For a mild oval, that average gives almost the same inside length as a round bangle. Many oval bangles are hinged, though. Then the size decides how it sits, not whether it passes your knuckles.

What Free Size (FS) Means on a Bangle

FS means the bangle adjusts. It may open with a screw or hinge, have open ends, or flex. It doesn't mean it fits every hand, so check the stated range before buying.

A bracelet or wristlet is different again. It fastens around the wrist, so wrist length decides its size.

How to Measure Baby Bangle Size

Use Method 2, gently, with the baby's hand loosely folded. Or measure a bangle that already fits. Baby sizes run on the same sixteenths below 2 inches, so 1.12 would be 1¾ inches (44.5 mm).

Babies grow quickly and hands can't be squeezed like an adult's. An openable baby bangle with a screw is easier to take off. Never force a bangle over a baby's hand.

Measuring Mistakes and How to Spot a Wrong Size Chart

These are the errors that cause most wrong orders.

Measuring the wrist. Your wrist is smaller than your knuckles. A rigid bangle sized to the wrist won't go on.
Measuring the outside. Only the inner diameter counts, never the outer edge.
Reading 2.10 as 2.1. It's ten sixteenths, bigger than 2.8.
Pulling the thread tight. A tight thread reads short and points you to a size too small.

Charts disagree because no government body sets bangle sizes. BIS standards cover gold purity, not size. So each seller builds its own chart, and some get it wrong.

The usual faults are easy to spot. Some charts treat 2.2 as 2.2 inches (55.9 mm), reading it as a decimal. Others shift every row by one size. A few print 2.10 as 2.1 or label the hand column "wrist".

Run any chart through this sanity check:

Size 2.8 must equal 63.5 mm, exactly 2½ inches.
Each size up adds about 3.2 mm across and about 10 mm around.
Size 2.10 must be bigger than 2.8.
A 2.2 listed at 55.9 mm means the chart read the number as a decimal.

A one gram gold ring in 22K costs about ₹17,400 in Kolkata right now. That is ₹15,045 of gold, plus making charges, a ₹45 hallmark charge and 3% GST. The gold figure comes from our own Kolkata gold rate board, timestamped 30 August 2026.

Most pages ranking for this price were built on a rate that has since moved. And almost none of them mention the one rule that matters most on a ring this light.

That rule is the reason this guide exists.

What a one gram gold ring costs today

Start with the metal. Everything else is a charge sitting on top of it.

Why most price pages you find are stale

Gold moved hard through 2025 and 2026. The World Gold Council's India demand report for Q2 2026 recorded a nearly 60% year-on-year rise in prices. That kept constraining affordability, it said, and pushed buyers towards lighter-weight, lower-carat jewellery.

That shift is why you are searching this phrase at all.

It also means something simpler. Any 1 gram gold ring price built on a ₹8,000 rate describes a market that ended. Check the timestamp on any rate board before you trust the total under it.

Real gold or plated? Two products, one phrase

Here is the confusion nobody clears up. "One gram gold" means two completely different things in the Indian market.

One meaning is literal. A 22k 1 gram gold ring weighs one gram on the scale and carries a 916 stamp. The other meaning is a trade label for brass or copper jewellery with a thin gold coating. Search the phrase on any marketplace and both appear in the same list.

The ranking pages disagree with each other too. Some say one gram gold has only a plated exterior and little resale value. Others insist it uses genuine gold throughout. Both are describing real products. They are just describing different ones.

The three-step test that settles it

You do not need to take anyone's word for it. Run these three checks instead.

Put it on the scale. A real 1 gm gold ring weighs about one gram, and it looks it. Thin band, nothing more. Gold is far denser than brass. So a chunky, wide ring sold as "one gram gold" is plated, not solid.
Look for 916 under a magnifier. That stamp means 22 carat, or 91.6% fine gold. A plated piece will not carry it legitimately.
Check the price against the rate. At ₹15,045 per gram, a real 1 gram ring cannot cost ₹800. If it does, it is plated. That is arithmetic, not opinion.

Plated rings are not a scam by themselves. Plenty of people buy them knowingly for fashion. The problem is buying one while believing it is bullion-grade metal.

Why the hallmark rule changes below 2 grams

This is the part almost nobody publishes, and it is the most useful fact on this page.

A gold article weighing less than two grams is exempt from mandatory hallmarking in India. It sits at item (b) on the BIS list of hallmarking exemptions under the Quality Control Order. So your 1 gram ring is legally allowed to leave the shop without a hallmark.

BIS explains why. Marking some designs weighing up to 2 grams is physically difficult. But the same BIS guidance adds something important. Jewellers may still get these pieces hallmarked by an Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. The centre tests under IS 1418 first.

Read that again. On the single most affordable real-gold item in India, your main protection is optional.

What ₹45 buys you on a light ring

Now the number that makes this concrete.

The BIS hallmarking charges FAQ puts hallmarking at ₹45 per gold article. The same page states plainly that hallmarking charges do not vary with the weight of the article. There is a ₹200 minimum per consignment, but that is spread across a batch.

So the cost of doing the right thing on a ₹17,400 ring is ₹45. Under three-tenths of one percent.

That reframes the whole conversation at the counter. "It is too light to hallmark" is true as a rule. It is not true as a reason. Ask whether the shop will hallmark it anyway, and watch how the answer lands.

Since 1 July 2021 a hallmark carries three marks. Those are the BIS logo, purity in carat and fineness, and a six-digit HUID. You can verify that HUID yourself in the BIS Care app before you pay.

Nine ring designs that work at one gram

One gram is genuinely thin. A design that ignores that will look mean on the finger. So a light weight gold ring design has to earn its look from shape, not mass.

These nine hold up.

Plain tapered band. Wider at the top, narrowing at the back. It puts the metal where you see it.
Half-round comfort band. Rounded outside, flat inside. Sits well for daily wear and hides thinness.
Twisted rope band. Two thin wires wound together. The twist reads as volume without needing extra grams.
Beaded edge band. Tiny raised dots along both rims. An old Bengali workshop trick for making light metal look considered.

Open adjustable shank. The ends do not meet, so the size adjusts. Best pick for a 1 gram gold ring for girl of eight or ten, because it avoids resizing loss later.
Tiny floral top. One small motif on a plain shank. This is the classic simple design for female buyers.
Two-tone thin band. A rhodium stripe against yellow gold. Contrast does the work that width normally does.
Cut-work open band. Pierced pattern through the band face. It looks wider than it weighs.

A one gram gold ring for ladies usually comes down to two of these — the thin band or the small motif top. Both carry well at this weight.

What does not work: wide bands, stone settings, and anything with a hollow dome. Each needs more metal to hold its shape, or it dents within a year. That is a craft limit, not a sales pitch.

Making charges on a light ring, and the trap

Here is the mechanism nobody explains. The karigar's labour does not shrink when the ring does.

Soldering a joint, filing a shank, polishing a band. Each takes roughly the same bench time at 1 gram as at 5. So a percentage making charge, applied to a very small gold value, pays the workshop very little. Shops respond in one of two ways. They quote a higher percentage on light pieces, or they set a flat minimum per ring.

Neither is dishonest. But the two produce different bills, and nobody warns you.

Flat charge versus percentage, worked out

Say a shop sets a flat ₹1,800 making charge per ring, regardless of weight.

On a 1 gram ring, the bill comes to ₹17,397 all-in. That is ₹17,397 per gram. On a 2 gram ring, the same flat charge spreads across twice the metal. The total becomes ₹32,893, or ₹16,447 per gram.

That is ₹950 per gram cheaper, from nothing but arithmetic. The gold rate never changed.

Who should buy 1 gram, and who should buy 2

A 1 gram ring is a fair purchase for some buyers and a poor one for others. Here is the honest split.

Buy at 1 gram if it is a first gold piece for a teenager. Or a small gift for a birthday or annaprashan. Or your one real-gold item on a tight budget. A lightweight ring you actually wear beats a heavier one you cannot afford.

Buy at 2 grams if you want it hallmarked without asking twice. Or you want a design with real surface detail. Or you plan to wear it daily for years. Thin bands do wear through.

Do not buy either for a baby. A ring small enough for an infant finger comes off and goes in the mouth. A bangle or a chain is the safer gift at that age. That is a safety point, not a sales one.

Notice the second-to-last row. At the same percentage making charge, the per-gram cost barely differs. The gap only opens up when the shop uses a flat minimum, as shown above.

Six checks to run at the counter

Do these before you pay. They take under five minutes.

Weigh it in front of you. Ask for the net gold weight, not gross. Anything that is not gold should be off the scale.
Ask for 916 under the magnifier. A registered jeweller keeps a 10x glass for exactly this.
Ask whether it is hallmarked, and if not, why not. Under two grams the honest answer is the exemption. Then ask if they will hallmark it.
Check the HUID in the BIS Care app. Six digits, alphanumeric, verified on your own phone in seconds.
Read the invoice lines. BIS requires the bill to show the description, net weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges separately.
Ask for making in rupees. A percentage on a 1 gram gold ring hides how small the base is.

Gold Rings for Men: 22K, 18K or 14K

Pure gold is soft. The alloy metals mixed in decide how well a ring survives your day.

22K has the richest colour and the most gold per gram. But a 22K band worn to the gym or gripping a bike handle will pick up dents. So skip 22K if you plan to stack rings or wear one daily for years. Keep it for a wedding band or a traditional piece.

How Many Grams a Daily-Wear Ring Should Weigh

For most men, 3 to 6 grams makes a comfortable daily band. Below 3 grams, a gold band can feel thin and bend more easily. Above 8 grams, it starts to feel heavy on the finger.

A ring for men under 5 grams keeps the metal value below about ₹73,000 at the 22K rate. In 18K, 5 grams comes to ₹59,000 of metal.

BIS Hallmark and HUID Checks Before You Pay

A hallmark is the official purity stamp. On gold jewellery sold since 1 July 2021, it has three parts, per the Bureau of Indian Standards hallmarking FAQ:

the BIS logo, a triangle
the purity, such as 22K916 or 18K750
a HUID, a six-character code unique to that piece

What the Hallmark on a Men's Ring Should Show

On a ring, the hallmark usually sits inside the band. The marks are tiny, so ask to see them under magnification. The BIS FAQ says registered jewellers must keep a magnifying glass of at least 10x for this.

Next, open the BIS Care app and use "Verify HUID". Type in the code from the ring. The result should match the purity and article type you're buying.

Finally, check the bill. BIS says the invoice should carry details of the hallmarked article. Keep it safe for any future complaint or exchange.

The Under-2-Gram Exception Few Buyers Know

Mandatory hallmarking has exemptions. The BIS guidance for jewellers exempts any article weighing less than 2 grams. So a very light ring can legally be sold without a hallmark.

That matters if you're shopping for lightweight rings for men for daily use. Under 2 grams, ask whether the piece is hallmarked anyway. If it isn't, get the karat written on the bill.

Silver Hallmarking in 2026: Still Voluntary

Silver hallmarking is not mandatory. Since 1 September 2025, though, any hallmarked silver must carry a HUID too. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs announcement via PIB lists seven silver grades, including 925.

For a silver ring, a hallmark with HUID is a good sign but not a legal requirement. Ask for the silver grade on the bill either way.

How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

You can measure your ring size at home with a strip of paper and a ruler. Measure in the evening, when fingers are slightly larger. Cold mornings shrink fingers and give you a size too small.

Cut a thin paper strip, about 5 mm wide.
Wrap it around the base of the finger you'll wear the ring on.
Mark where the paper overlaps. It should be snug but slide over your knuckle.
Lay the strip flat and measure to the mark in millimetres. That's your finger's circumference.
Repeat twice more and use the largest reading.

Thread works too, but it stretches, so paper gives a steadier reading. If you already own a ring that fits, measure its inside diameter instead.

Indian ring sizes map to inner circumference. Share your millimetre reading with the jeweller and ask them to convert it.

Wide bands fit tighter than slim ones. For a band wider than about 6 mm, consider going half a size up.

Buying Without Trying the Ring On First

A plain gold or silver band can usually be resized later by a small amount. Rings with stones all the way round are harder to resize, and some can't be. So measure carefully before ordering a stone-set ring.

Which Finger and Hand to Wear a Ring On in India

In India, no rule fixes which finger a man must wear a ring on. The ring finger, next to the little finger, is the usual choice for engagement and wedding rings. Which hand you use depends on your family and community custom.

A light weight pendant in 22K gold costs about ₹16,840 per gram in Kolkata today, all-in. That figure uses our board rate of ₹14,560 per gram, updated 23 September 2026. It also includes an example 12% making charge, the ₹45 hallmark fee and 3% GST. So a 1.5 gram pendant comes to roughly ₹25,240, and a 3 gram piece lands near ₹50,440.

Light Weight Pendant Price at Today's Kolkata Rate

A light weight gold pendant usually weighs 0.5 to 3 grams. At a 22K Kolkata rate of ₹14,560 per gram (23 September 2026), a 1 gram pendant costs about ₹16,840. That includes a 12% example making charge, a ₹45 hallmark fee and 3% GST. A 3 gram pendant comes to roughly ₹50,440.

Notice the last column. The per-gram cost barely moves, because the ₹45 hallmark fee is the only fixed cost here. That changes fast if a shop charges a flat minimum instead of a percentage. More on that below.

Why a Ready Pendant Bill Shouldn't Show 5% GST

Plenty of pages say gold carries 3% GST and making charges carry 5%. That's only half right. A ready-made pendant is treated as a single composite supply. So the 3% GST applies to the full value, making charges included.

The 5% rate is for job work, when you hand over your own gold to be made into jewellery. The GST Council kept both rates unchanged in its September 2025 overhaul. If your bill for a ready pendant shows 5% on making, ask the shop to explain it.

How Many Grams Makes a Pendant Light Weight

No rule or standard defines "light weight". In practice, you'll find most daily-wear gold pendants between 0.5 and 3 grams. We use these bands on our own guides:

The 2 gram line matters more than it looks. It decides whether a hallmark is legally required, which we cover further down.

Light Weight Pendant vs Heavy Pendant

A light piece costs less upfront and sits flat under a kurti or blouse. Still, making charges take a bigger share of a small bill. A very thin piece under 1 gram can also bend if it catches on fabric.

A heavy pendant holds its shape and carries more gold. Since exchange value follows gold weight, more of your spend stays in the metal. On the other hand, it pulls on a thin chain and suits occasions better than office days.

Making Charges on a Small Pendant: What to Ask

A karigar (the craftsman) spends about the same bench time on a 0.5 gram pendant as a 2 gram one. So shops handle small pieces in one of two ways. Some charge a percentage of the gold value. Others set a flat minimum per piece.

Here's why that matters. On a 0.5 gram pendant worth ₹7,280 in gold, 12% making is ₹874. A flat ₹1,500 minimum on the same piece works out to about 20.6%. Neither approach is wrong, but they give very different bills. We haven't listed a national making-charge range because there isn't a fixed one.

Three questions keep the comparison fair:

What is the making charge in rupees, not just as a percentage?
Is there a minimum charge per piece?
Does antique or cutwork finishing cost extra on this design?

22K, 18K or 14K Gold for a Light Weight Pendant

Purity changes both the price and how the piece wears. 22K is 91.6% gold, 18K is 75% and 14K is 58.5%.

22K gives you the richest colour and the most gold for your money. However, it's softer, so a fine bail or thin outline can bend. 18K is harder and holds small stones better. That's why most solitaire-style pendants use it.

Pairing a Chain With a Light Weight Pendant

Check the bail first. That's the small loop the chain passes through. A narrow bail won't take a thick chain, and a chunky chain makes a small pendant look lost.

Match the purity too. A 22K pendant on an 18K chain can show a slight colour difference in daylight. For length, 16 to 18 inches usually sits at the collarbone for office wear. You can browse ladies' gold chains by style once you know your pendant's bail size.

Hallmark and HUID Checks for Pieces Under 2 Grams

A hallmark on gold jewellery has three marks since 1 July 2021, according to the BIS hallmarking FAQ. You'll see the BIS logo, the purity (for example, 22K916) and a six-digit HUID. HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification, a code unique to that piece.

Here's the part most buyers miss. BIS exempts jewellery weighing up to 2 grams from mandatory hallmarking, because marking some small designs is difficult. A jeweller can still get those pieces hallmarked by choice. BIS sets the fee at ₹45 per article, whatever the weight.

For heavier pieces, the rule has kept expanding. The sixth phase came into force on 2 March 2026 and brought mandatory hallmarking to 380 districts. It covers six purities: 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K.

Run these checks before you pay:

Ask whether the piece is hallmarked, even if it weighs under 2 grams.
Look at the three marks under a magnifier at the counter.
Enter the HUID in the "Verify HUID" feature of the BIS CARE app.
Make sure the invoice lists weight, purity, HUID, making charge and GST separately.

If a light piece isn't hallmarked, get the purity written on the bill. BIS-recognised assaying centres will also test jewellery for consumers. Gold Price Calculator India: Making Charges, GST & Bill

Your bill is higher than weight times rate, and you want to know why. Here is the formula a gold calculator uses: (weight x rate per gram) + making charges + GST.

Take 10 grams of 22K at ₹15,245 per gram, the board rate published on 28 August 2026. That is ₹1,52,450 of gold. Add 12% making, ₹18,294. Then 3% GST on the total. You pay ₹1,75,866. So every rupee above the metal has a name, and you can check each one.

The gold value formula, in one line

Gold value = weight in grams x rate per gram for that purity. Everything else is a charge sitting on top.

Write it out as your shop would bill it:

(weight x rate) + making + wastage + hallmark + fitting - discount, then 3% GST.

That is the whole thing. A gold calculator just does the arithmetic faster than you can on a phone.

But the order matters more than most people expect. Discount comes off before tax, not after. More on that below.

The three inputs: rate, weight and purity

Get these three right and the rest is addition.

Which rate your shop is actually using

Rates move daily, sometimes twice a day. The India Bullion and Jewellers Association publishes a benchmark. Shops then price off it with their own margin.

First, ask which purity the quoted rate is for. A rate quoted for 24K is not the rate for your 22K chain.

Also check the update time on any rate board before you compare two shops. Our own Kolkata gold rate board showed 22K at ₹15,245 per gram on 28 August 2026. The 18K rate was ₹12,350. Both carry a timestamp.

What 916 means, and the 22K to 24K gap

916 is the fineness stamp for 22K gold. It means 91.6% pure gold by weight.

So if a shop quotes you a 24K rate, multiply by 0.916 for the 22K equivalent. At a 24K rate of ₹15,824 per gram, 22K works out near ₹14,495.

BIS permits six caratages for hallmarking under IS 1417:2016. They are 14K (585), 18K (750), 20K (833), 22K (916), 23K (958) and 24K (995). If your bill says 22K, the stamp should say 916.

Whether stones and thread are on the scale

This one costs people real money. Ask for net gold weight, not gross weight.

Stones, beads, thread and lac filling are not gold. Still, they sit on the same scale. A stone-set piece billed at gross weight charges you gold rate for glass.

So ask the counter to show you both numbers. A shop that can only give you one is worth a second question.

The four charges that sit on top of gold

Four lines turn a metal price into a bill. Each one behaves differently.

Making charges: the biggest line after gold

Making charge is the labour to turn metal into an ornament. It is quoted as a percentage of gold value, or as a flat rupee amount per gram.

There is no published national standard for it. In fact, the calculator pages ranking for this term quote 8-25%, 8-15% and 3-25%. None of them cites a source. So treat any range you read as a guess.

What matters is the number on your bill. On a 14 gram piece at ₹15,245, every 1% of making charge is ₹2,134. Moving from 12% to 8% saves ₹8,537 on the same necklace.

That is why you should ask for making as a figure in rupees, not just a percentage. Then compare that figure between shops.

Wastage: sometimes a second making charge

Wastage covers metal lost while the piece is made. It is legitimate in principle. Handwork does lose gold.

But here is the part nobody sources. GST law has notified no prescribed wastage limits, as the gems and jewellery sector's GST FAQ states plainly. So any wastage percentage you are quoted is that shop's own policy.

Plenty of shops fold wastage into the making charge instead of billing it separately. Both are normal. Being charged both, at full rates, is worth questioning out loud.

Hallmark charges: what BIS actually charges

This is the one line with a published number. According to the BIS hallmarking FAQ, hallmarking costs ₹45 per gold article. The minimum per consignment is ₹200.

Two details from the same page are useful at a counter. First, hallmarking charges do not depend on the weight of the piece. Second, they do not include making or wastage charges.

Which means a hallmark line that scales with your gold weight is not a hallmarking fee. Ask what it is.

Fitting, card and miscellaneous lines

Fitting or card charge covers a clasp, a screw, a display card. Miscellaneous covers whatever else the shop adds.

These are small, usually a few hundred rupees. Even so, they belong on the bill as their own lines, with names.

GST on gold: 3% or 5%, and why bills differ

Here is the direct answer. On a normal retail purchase of finished gold jewellery, you pay 3% GST on the whole value, including making charges.

The reason is Section 8 of the CGST Act. Selling an ornament is a composite supply: gold and labour naturally bundled, with gold as the principal supply. As a result, the rate for the principal supply applies to the entire transaction.

The 5% figure is real. But it is the rate for job work. That applies when labour is charged as its own supply, not when you buy a finished piece off the shelf.

So why do two friends get differently structured bills? Because invoicing practice varies. The gems and jewellery sector GST FAQ covers this directly. Where gold and labour carry separate consideration, gold is taxed at 3% and labour at 5%.

That split costs you more. On the necklace below, the split invoice produces ₹7,308 of GST against ₹6,822 on the composite route. A difference of ₹487 on one bill.

So ask your jeweller how they invoice, and why. Tax treatment turns on the facts of the sale. Check anything unusual with a tax professional, not with us.

Where the discount sits, before or after GST

Discount comes off first. GST is then charged on the reduced amount.

The condition is that the discount must be recorded on the invoice. Per the same sector GST FAQ, a discount given at the time of sale is excluded from the taxable value. But it has to appear on the bill.

An unrecorded discount is not excluded. So a verbal "I'll give you 5% off" that never becomes a line is worth less than it sounds.

Next, check the sequence on your bill. Gold, making, discount, then tax.

A worked example on a real jewellery bill

Here is a bill with every line an Indian jewellery invoice actually carries. A 22K necklace with a matching piece, at our published board rate.

Before the discount, the same necklace totals ₹2,46,517. So the discount is worth ₹12,311 once the tax effect follows it down.

That works out to ₹16,729 per gram, all in. Against a metal rate of ₹15,245, you are paying about 9.7% over gold. That covers labour, fittings, hallmarking and tax.

One honest caveat. No calculator output is anyone's final bill. Shops differ on rate, rounding and policy. So use the number as a check, not as a quote.

Check any gold bill in sixty seconds

Do this at the counter, before you pay.

Read the net gold weight. Not gross. Ask if stones or thread are included.
Multiply weight by the purity rate. That is your metal cost.
Subtract it from the pre-tax subtotal. What is left is making, wastage and fittings combined.
Divide that gap by the metal cost. Now you have the real making percentage, whatever the bill calls it.
Check the discount sits above the tax line.
Check the hallmark line is per article, not per gram.

Say step four gives a number far above what you were quoted. Then something is being charged twice, under two names.

Above all, a shop that will not itemise is telling you something. That is an opinion, not a rule. Even so, it has served buyers well.

Selling or exchanging old gold

You will not get the board rate. That is the honest starting point.

Buyers deduct for purity, for melting loss and for their own margin. Old unhallmarked pieces get tested, and the tested purity decides the payout, not the stamp.

Still, you can settle the purity question independently. BIS lets any member of the public have jewellery assayed at a recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. The charge is ₹200, by the fire assay method under IS 1418.

On an exchange, GST is charged on the open market value of the new piece. The sector GST FAQ is explicit here. Your old gold reduces what you hand over, but it does not reduce the tax base.

We publish no fixed buyback percentage. Be wary of anyone who quotes one before weighing and testing your gold.

Why two shops in one city quote different rates

Same city, same day, two different numbers on the board. Several things move it.

Shops price off a benchmark and add their own margin. Update timing differs too, so a 10 am board and a 4 pm board are not comparable.

Import duty feeds through as well. India raised the duty on gold and silver to 15% from 6% on 13 May 2026, as CNBC reported. The new structure is a 10% basic customs duty plus a 5% cess. So any page still quoting 6% is describing a market that ended in May.

Compare like with like. Same purity, same timestamp, and making charges in rupees.

Run the numbers before you pay

The arithmetic is genuinely simple. Weight, rate, making, the small lines, discount, then tax.

Once you have done it once, you will do it in thirty seconds at any counter. Keep a gold calculator open on your phone if it helps. Plus you will ask better questions, which is most of the benefit.

Weight is where most buyers overspend. A ring doesn't need bulk to survive daily wear. Instead, it needs a sensible cross-section.

Here's the mechanic nobody explains. A 3 gram band with a thick, narrow profile outlasts a 5 gram ring. The lighter one concentrates metal where the stress lands. The heavier one spreads it into a wide, thin face. Thin and wide bends. Narrow and deep doesn't.

So a light ring isn't automatically a fragile ring. Hollow work and fine filigree are the real weak points, not the gram figure on the tag. On a tight budget, the silver gents ring range buys width and presence for far less.

Cost follows the same logic. The Bureau of Indian Standards lists gold hallmarking at ₹45 per article. It also states plainly that the charge doesn't depend on the item's weight. So a light ring carries no certification penalty. Still, confirm the current rate with your jeweller, because fees get revised.

Signet gold ring designs and who they suit

A signet is a ring with a flat raised top. Traditionally it carried a family seal. Today, though, it usually carries an initial, a small motif or nothing at all.

Signets suit older boys better than younger ones. That's because the flat face needs a certain hand width to look balanced. On a twelve-year-old it tends to look borrowed; on a seventeen-year-old it looks deliberate.

If you want a name or initial engraved, keep it on the top face and leave the shank plain. The shank is the lower half of the band. Engraving that wraps all the way around is the single most common reason a ring can't be resized later.

Diamonds on a boy's ring have a bad reputation, mostly earned by oversized cluster settings from twenty years ago. A single stone sunk level with the metal reads very differently. Flush setting keeps the stone below the surface, so it can't catch or chip.

Be honest about the use case, though. For a boy who plays sport four days a week, the money is better spent on a heavier plain band. A flush-set stone also narrows your resizing options, because the metal around it can't be cut.

Expect a wider band and more weight here, often 5 to 8 grams. Photographs reward presence, and the ring is worn less roughly afterwards. Order up from the everyday finger if it must clear a knuckle in winter.

Both are hallmarked in India. The Bureau of Indian Standards permits six caratages under IS 1417:2016. That list includes 18K at 750 fineness and 22K at 916. Fineness simply means purity in parts per thousand.

The difference that matters is hardness. According to the World Gold Council, alloying pure gold with other metals gives it more durability. 18K carries 75% gold; 22K carries 91.7%. More alloy therefore means a harder ring.

Here's where our own advice cuts both ways. We'd steer a sporty twelve-year-old towards 18K. Yet many Indian families buy gold partly to exchange or pass on later. For that purpose, 22K carries more metal per gram. Exchange terms vary by jeweller, so ask before you decide.

How to choose a gold ring for boys: 6 checks

Run these in order at the counter.

Confirm the finger and the hand. Left and right differ by up to half a size on most people.
Press the inside edge. A sharp inner rim will annoy him within a week.
Check the shank is plain. Plain shanks resize; fully patterned ones often don't.
Weigh the design against the use. Sport and school favour 18K; ceremony and gifting favour 22K.
Ask what the making charge is. It's separate from the metal rate and varies by design complexity.

Measure in the evening. Fingers swell slightly through the day, and an evening measurement gives you the honest maximum.

Two more things skew the reading. Cold weather shrinks fingers noticeably, so a January measurement can mislead by a full size. Prominent knuckles need clearance too — the ring must pass the knuckle, then sit without spinning at the base.

For boys between about ten and sixteen, expect to resize at least once. So build for it.

How much a plain gold band can be resized

A plain band usually moves one to two sizes in either direction. Going up stretches or adds metal; going down removes it, which changes the weight. Both are chargeable, and both take a day or two.

What resists resizing: eternity-style bands with stones right round, deeply engraved shanks, and wide signets with a broad flat base. Repeated resizing also thins the shank over time. If a boy is still growing, tell the jeweller upfront and keep the lower half plain.

BIS hallmark checks to run in the showroom

Since 1 July 2021, a hallmark on gold carries three marks. The Government of India lists them: the BIS Standard Mark, purity in carats and fineness, and a six-digit HUID. That last one is a unique article code.

Three things you can do on the spot:

Ask for the magnifier. BIS requires a registered jeweller to keep a 10X magnifying glass to show you the hallmark.
Verify the HUID. The BIS Care app has a Verify HUID feature that returns the article's recorded details.
Take a proper invoice. BIS states the bill must carry the hallmarked article's details, which is what you'd need for any complaint.

Any recognised centre will assay the piece for that.

Where to start if you're still undecided

Buy the plain band first. A 3 to 4 gram 18K comfort-fit ring in the right size gets worn daily. It survives school and college without fuss. Better still, it gives you something to build on. Signets, stones and statement widths work far better as a second ring. By then you'll know how he actually wears the first.

The four lines on your invoice

Metal value — net gold weight in grams, times the rate for that purity.

GST — 3% on the gold and diamond value, plus 5% on making charges billed separately.

Ask for all four as separate lines. A jeweller who quotes only a final number is asking you to trust arithmetic you can't see.

Of every setting here, this is the one built for abuse. The walls shield the stones, so it survives keyboards, handlebars and gym bars.

Bezel-set band

A thin rim of metal wraps the whole stone. Similar money to channel setting, sometimes less.

Bezels hide a fraction of the stone, which slightly dulls the sparkle. In exchange, nothing sticks up to snag.

Two-tone band

White gold and yellow gold meet in one ring, with stones usually on the white section. Around ₹75,000 to ₹1,30,000.

The contrast does the visual work, letting you buy less carat weight. Remember that the white portion needs re-plating later.

Wide band with clustered stones

Eight millimetres or more across, carrying grouped stones. Often ₹1,50,000 and up, purely on gold weight.

Honestly, I'd steer you away from this for daily wear. It's a lot of metal on a working hand, and it dates faster than a plain band.

How to choose the right men's diamond ring

Five decisions set the price and the comfort. Take them in this order.

Carat weight and what's normal

Men's rings carry small stones. A pavé band might hold twenty stones of 0.01 to 0.03 carats each. Together that's well under half a carat.

A 1-carat single stone on a men's diamond ring is unusual in India. It sits high, it snags, and it can double your bill in one line. If you want visible size, a cluster of small stones reads bigger for less money.

Band width and daily comfort

Width changes fit. A wider band touches more of your finger, so it feels tighter at the same size.

For daily wear, 4mm to 6mm suits most hands. Ask for a comfort fit — a rounded inner surface — if you type or ride for hours. Above all, get sized in the exact width you're buying, not in a thin sample band.

14K, 18K or 22K

22K is too soft for a stone-set men's ring. Prongs bend, stones loosen, and you'll be back for repairs.

18K is the sensible default. 14K is harder still and costs less per gram, because it's 58.5% gold against 18K's 75%. That puts 14K near 78% of the 18K rate — a real saving on a heavy band.

Both 14K and 18K can be hallmarked in India. So can 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K.

White, yellow, rose or platinum

Yellow gold needs no upkeep and suits most Indian skin tones. White gold is rhodium-plated, so it will need re-plating as the coating wears. Rose gold sits between them and hides scratches well.

Platinum costs more per gram and weighs more on the hand. It never needs plating, though. Ask for both prices before you decide.

Lab-grown or natural

Both are real diamonds. They differ in origin and in price behaviour.

Lab-grown prices have fallen hard. GJEPC trade data reported by Business Standard shows the scale of it. India's average export price for polished lab-grown diamonds was about $389 per carat in 2022. By early 2026 it was roughly $71. Natural stones averaged about $758 per carat in the same period.

Buy lab-grown if you want more visible stone for the money. Buy natural if resale and long-term pricing matter more to you. Neither choice is wrong, and neither one is an investment.

Certification: two documents, two different bodies

This trips up almost every buyer. Your ring carries two certifications, and they cover different things.

The metal is certified by BIS. Since 1 July 2021, a hallmark carries three marks. Those are the BIS logo, the purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID. You can check that HUID yourself in the BIS Care app, using its Verify HUID feature. That's set out in the Bureau of Indian Standards hallmarking FAQ. The stone is graded by a gem lab. Only gold and silver fall under hallmarking in India. Diamonds never do, whatever a showroom tells you. If the difference still feels blurry, hallmark gold versus BIS gold sorts it out in one read.

One rule also changed recently. From 1 October 2025, GIA stopped applying its natural-diamond 4Cs vocabulary to lab-grown stones. It now issues a Laboratory-Grown Diamond Quality Assessment instead. That describes a stone as Premium or Standard, and anything below the Standard threshold gets no assessment at all. GIA set this out in its October 2025 services announcement. IGI reports still use the familiar 4Cs, so two lab-grown stones can carry very different paperwork.

What happens if you sell or exchange it later

Read the buyback clause before you pay, not after.

Standard gold buyback covers the metal. Stones usually get removed first, and the gold is weighed without them. Making charges and taxes are commonly deducted too.

That fine print has been challenged. In 2025, the Pune district consumer disputes redressal commission ruled on exactly this. It held a jeweller responsible for extracting extra money as government taxes during a diamond bangle buyback. The commission directed the firm to buy back at the prevailing market rate, deducting making charges and a further 10%.

So ask three questions, and get the answers in writing. What gets deducted? Are the stones valued at all? Which rate applies on the day you return?

Sizing, care and re-plating

Indian ring sizes are not US sizes. India uses a numbered scale running roughly from 1 to 30, matched to inside diameter in millimetres.

A 19.8mm inside diameter is about an Indian 22, and roughly a US 10. Trade listings often print both, which is exactly why guessing goes wrong.

Measure a ring you already wear, at the inside edge, in millimetres. Then match that number to a chart. Fingers swell in heat, so size in the afternoon rather than first thing.

Care is simple. Warm water, mild soap, a soft brush around the setting. Take it off at the gym, because a bent prong costs more than fresh plating.

Re-plating a white gold ring depends on how hard you wear it. Edges dull first. Ask what a re-plate costs before you commit, not two years later.

Before you pay

Price the gold first. Ask for four separate lines, then check the HUID in the app. Read the buyback clause before you leave the counter.

A 22-inch chain suits most Indian men, sitting just below the collarbone. Here's how each length usually falls.

Jewellers start from a published fine silver rate, such as the IBJA rate. Then they work out the 925 rate by multiplying by 0.925.

Here's a worked example using our S/4/36 Silver Bold Chain at 10.97 g. It uses the IBJA fine silver rate of ₹233.05/g (ex-GST) as of 24 September 2026. These figures are indicative.

925 rate: ₹233.05 × 0.925 = ₹215.57 per gram.
Metal value: 10.97 g × ₹215.57 = ₹2,364.80.
GST: 3% of metal value plus making charge.

Making charges change the per-gram cost the most. Some are per gram, while others are a flat amount per piece. For example, a flat ₹1,000 charge adds ₹333 per gram to a 3 g chain. On a 20 g chain, the same ₹1,000 adds only ₹50 per gram. That's why light chains often cost more per gram. Always ask for the making charge in rupees before you agree.

Take a 925 silver chain for men weighing 20 grams. As of 24 September 2026, its metal alone is 20 × ₹215.57 = ₹4,311.40. Add making and 3% GST to reach the bill.

Why Silver Chains Cost More in 2026 Than in 2025

Silver chains cost more in 2026 because the silver rate nearly doubled in a year. Silver in Delhi was ₹1,23,200 per kg on 1 September 2025. The IBJA fine rate was ₹2,33,050 per kg on 24 September 2026.

In practice, the metal in a 20 g 925 chain cost about ₹2,279 in September 2025. In September 2026, the same metal cost about ₹4,311. So any page still quoting chains "from ₹700" is using old rates. How to Check If a Silver Chain Is Real 925

The surest check is a BIS hallmark with a HUID code, which you can verify in the BIS Care app. HUID means Hallmarking Unique Identification, a code unique to each piece.

According to a Press Information Bureau release from September 2025, HUID-based silver hallmarking began on 1 September 2025. It is voluntary. Under IS 2112:2025, the mark has three parts. These are the BIS Standard Mark with "SILVER", the purity grade and the HUID.

Find the mark. Look near the clasp for the BIS logo, "SILVER", "925" and the HUID.
Open the BIS Care app. Enter the HUID in the verify section.
Match the details. The app shows the article type, purity, hallmarking date and the jeweller's registration number.
Check the bill. It should state purity, net weight and the HUID if the piece is hallmarked.

Is hallmarking compulsory for silver chains in India? No. In June 2026, BIS was still assessing readiness, as Business Today reported on the voluntary status. But if a piece is hallmarked, it must carry a HUID.

Does a 925 Silver Chain Turn Black With Sweat?

Yes, a 925 silver chain will darken with sweat. Sulphur compounds in sweat and air react with silver to form silver sulphide, a dark film. Gym sweat speeds this up.

That darkening is surface tarnish, not damage. Here's a 30-second routine after a sweaty day:

Rinse the chain in plain lukewarm water.
Pat it fully dry with a soft cotton cloth.
Store it in a small zip bag with the air pressed out.

Is 925 Silver Good for Daily Wear?

Yes, 925 silver is good for daily wear. Choose a sturdy band and remove it for a few tasks. Weight, profile and finish decide how well it copes.

A daily-wear ring should feel solid when you press it, not springy. Low designs with no tall stones survive housework, typing and travel best. A plain polished finish shows scratches. A brushed or oxidised finish hides them better.

Can You Wear a Silver Ring While Bathing or Cooking?

You can bathe with a 925 silver ring on, but take it off to cook and clean. Plain water won't harm it. Soap, though, leaves a dull film and collects behind stones.

Cooking is harder on silver. Eggs and onions contain sulphur, which darkens silver fast. Bleach and floor cleaners can pit the surface. Chlorinated pool water also speeds up tarnish, so remove the ring before you swim.

Which Finger Should a Woman Wear a Silver Ring On?

A woman can wear a silver ring on any finger. Most choose the ring finger or the middle finger.

Why Does a Silver Ring Leave a Green Mark or Itch?

A green mark usually comes from the copper in 925 silver reacting with sweat. It washes off with soap and water.

An itchy red rash is a different matter. DermNet notes that sterling silver is 92.5% silver alloyed with copper. It may contain traces of nickel, a common skin allergen. Plated base-metal rings often contain more nickel. No silver ring is safe for every skin. If a rash appears, stop wearing the ring and see a dermatologist.

Is an Adjustable Silver Ring a Good Gift?

An adjustable silver ring is a good gift when you don't know her size. The band is open at the back, so she can press it to fit.

Adjust it gently, and only once or twice. Repeated bending weakens silver at the same spot until it cracks. A closed band in her real size will always feel more solid.

How to Check a Silver Ring Is Real in 60 Seconds

If a silver ring is BIS hallmarked under the new standard, you can verify it in about a minute. You use its HUID code on the free BIS Care app. HUID is a six-character code unique to each piece.

Since 1 September 2025, a silver hallmark under IS 2112:2025 has three parts. The Press Information Bureau release on HUID-based silver hallmarking lists them. You'll see the BIS mark with the word "SILVER", the purity grade and the HUID.

Find the marks inside the band. Use your phone torch and zoom in.
Install the BIS Care app from the Bureau of Indian Standards. It's also on Google Play, and first login needs a one-time password.
Tap "Verify HUID" and type the code exactly as stamped.
Read the result. It should show the article type, purity grade, hallmarking date, assaying centre and jeweller's registration number.
Match it to the ring and the bill. A ring should show as a ring, at 925.

If the details don't match, don't buy. You can also report the problem through the app's complaints feature. Pieces hallmarked before September 2025 carry the older four-part mark, which has no HUID.

Is Silver Hallmarking Mandatory in India?

No, silver hallmarking is voluntary in India. BIS has run voluntary silver hallmarking since October 2005, and the HUID system is voluntary too.

There's one rule, though. Any silver piece hallmarked under IS 2112:2025 must carry a HUID. An unhallmarked ring isn't illegal or automatically fake. You just can't check it on the app. For the gold side of the same system, read our guide on checking gold purity before you buy.

Are Biswakarma's Silver Rings Hallmarked?

Not yet. Our current silver rings are 92.5% silver but don't carry a BIS hallmark or HUID. Our new silver collections will carry a HUID.

Until then, ask for a bill that states purity and net weight.If an app-checkable hallmark matters most to you, ask which pieces carry a HUID, or wait for the new range.

Why the Magnet and Ice Tests Don't Prove Anything

Neither the magnet test nor the ice test can prove a ring is 925 silver. Silver isn't magnetic, but brass and copper aren't either. Those are the usual fakes.

The ice test fails for a similar reason. Silver melts ice quickly because it carries heat well. Copper does the same. The reliable checks are a HUID, a bill stating purity, or a jeweller's test on an XRF machine. These rules apply beyond rings. How to Get the Ring Size Right, Even for a Surprise

The easiest way to get her size is to borrow a ring she already wears on the same finger. Bring it to the store, and we'll match the size.

To measure at home, use these steps:

Wrap a thin paper strip around the base of the finger in the evening. Fingers swell slightly later in the day.
Mark where the paper overlaps, then lay it flat on a ruler.
Read the length in millimetres. That's the finger's circumference.
Check the paper can slide over the knuckle. If the knuckle is wider, size for the knuckle.
Match the number to our Indian ring size chart.

Between two sizes? Go up for a wide band and down for a thin one.

If the size is still wrong, we resize rings for free. A gifted silver ring can also be exchanged by the person who received it. Rings set with stones all the way round are hard to resize. For a surprise gift, an open-back or plain design is the safer bet.

Why Silver Turns Black and How to Stop It

A 925 silver ring will darken over time. Silver reacts with sulphur in air, sweat and some foods. This forms silver sulphide, the black layer called tarnish. No silver ring stays bright forever, but you can slow it down a lot.

Put the ring on after perfume, lotion and hairspray, never before. Wipe it with a soft cotton cloth when you take it off. Store it in its box, ideally inside a small zip pouch to keep air out. Every Biswakarma product comes with a box.

To clean it, soak the ring briefly in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and dry it completely. Skip toothpaste and ketchup hacks. They scratch polished silver and strip plating. For deep tarnish, bring the ring in. We clean and re-polish silver for free.

An oxidised finish is different from tarnish. It's darkened on purpose to show detail. Don't polish it off.

Rhodium-Plated or Plain Silver: Which Lasts Longer?

Plain 925 silver lasts longer overall, while rhodium plating keeps a bright shine for longer before wearing through. Rhodium plating is a thin, hard white-metal coat.

On a ring, the plating rubs off first on the palm side, where you grip things. Once it wears, it needs re-plating. Plain silver tarnishes sooner, but it polishes back fully every time. Choose rhodium if you dislike cleaning. Choose plain silver if you want simple care for years.
